MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (Jan. 16, 2010) - Nova Southeastern University women's basketball team fell 62-51 to rival Barry on Saturday afternoon at the Health and Sports Center. NSU drops to 9-8 overall and 2-4 in the Sunshine State Conference, while Barry improves to 11-4 on the season and 3-2 in the conference.
Both teams got out to an extreme sluggish start as Barry held a 9-5 lead through the first 10 minutes of the game.
Most of the first half's points came in the final five minutes. NSU had 15 of its 24 points and Barry tallied 14 of its 26 points in those five minutes. With Barry up 12-9, Abbie Tepe (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) hit a pair of free throws at 4:57 to make it a one-point game. NSU eventually tied it at 16-all as Priscilla Perez (Jr., Miami, Fla.) drilled a three-point shot with 3:32 remaining in the half.
The Buccaneers went up by as many as seven as Christina Thompson hit a three-point shot at 2:20 to make it 23-16. NSU chipped away at Barry's lead in the final two minutes, coming to within one as Tepe calmly made both foul shots with four seconds to go. However, Kisa Duncan made the first shot of a one-and-one with 1.1 seconds left as the Buccaneers took a 26-24 lead heading into halftime.
The Sharks tied the game early in the second half on a Stevie Kamp (So., Mesa, Ariz.) layup at 18:14 made it 28-28. Barry used a 10-2 run to build up an eight-point lead, going up 38-30 on a Thompson three-pointer at 15:24. NSU answered with a three-pointer of its own by Jada Buckner (So., Loudon, Tenn.) to make it a five-point game. However, the Buccaneers gradually began to pull away from the Sharks, going up by as many as 14 as a Mariesa Green layup at 4:36 made it 56-42. NSU was able to pull to within nine at two different points, but that was as close as the Sharks could get.
NSU shot 31.5 percent for the game, going 17-for-54. Barry was 24-for-67 and shot 35.8 percent. The Buccaneers also held a 42-37 advantage in rebounds.
Lindsey Newpher and Tepe both led NSU with 11 points. Both Kamp and Buckner had a team-high seven rebounds.
Mariesa Greene led the game in both points and rebounds with a 22-point, 12-rebound double-double.
NSU returns to the hardwood Saturday, Jan. 23 when the Sharks host Florida Tech at The Arena at the Don Taft University Center. Tip off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
