BOCA RATON, Fla. (Jan. 6, 2010) - Nova Southeastern University women's basketball used a key second-half run to come from behind and defeat Lynn 67-66 in a Sunshine State Conference game on Wednesday evening at the de Hoernle Center. It was NSU's first SSC win of the 2009-10 campaign as the Sharks improve to 8-6 overall and 1-2 in the conference. Lynn falls to 9-4 overall and 1-2 in the SSC.
The Sharks had to contend with a strong Lynn team at the start of the game. Behind 4-for-5 shooting from three-point range, Lynn led NSU 18-4 at 14:21. However, NSU began to cut into the Fighting Knights' advantage and ultimately made it a six-point game. Erin Zampell (So., Naples, Fla.) powered her way through the Lynn defense for a layup at 4:49 as Lynn was up 27-21.
NSU eventually got it down to a five-point, 35-30 game on a Jada Buckner (So. Loudon, Tenn.) three-pointer with 50 seconds left in the half. However, Lynn answered with a three from Kira Harvey at 17 seconds en route to taking a 38-30 lead heading into halftime.
In the second half, the Sharks erased an early 12-point deficit and eventually went up by five at the 13:15 mark. With Lynn up by seven, Lindsey Newpher (Sr., Depew, Okla.) made a free throw at 14:46. Then Abbie Tepe (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) hit three-straight three-pointers in a span of 30 seconds to propel NSU to a 47-44 lead at 13:48. Tepe's first three came at 14:20, while her third long range shot was made at 13:48. Meanwhile, LaShawnna Edwards (Sr., Miami, Fla.) made a layup at 13:15 as NSU held a five-point lead.
Lynn eventually regained the lead, going up 51-49 on a pair of Celsea Patterson foul shots at 11:21. However, a seven-point run sparked by a Tepe three allowed NSU to go up 56-51 with 8:22. The Sharks maintained the lead until Quanisha Dixon swished a three-pointer with 54 seconds remaining to give Lynn a 66-65 lead. Edwards scored what proved to be the game-winning jumper with 32 seconds to go.
The Sharks held on in the last 30 seconds, coming up with a big stop as Lynn missed a lay-up with five seconds remaining. Then after NSU missed the one-and-one, Lynn heaved the ball down the length of the court for a desperation three-point shot that grazed just the bottom of their basket.
NSU shot 44.6 percent for the game, going 25-for-56. Lynn was 23-for-55 and 41.8 percent. The Fighting Knights outrebounded NSU 36-33.
Behind 4-of-6 shooting from long range, Tepe scored a team-high 18 points. Of Tpee's 18 points, 16 came in the second half. Edwards added 11 points, while Stevie Kamp (So., Mesa, Ariz.) grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.
Dixon led the game with 19 points, while Patterson chipped in with 18. Harvey also pulled down a game-high seven rebounds.
NSU returns to action on Saturday when the Sharks host Eckerd. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m., from The Arena at the Don Taft University Center.
