Box Score

LAKELAND, Fla. –
The Nova Southeastern men’s soccer team extended its win streak to three matches with a road victory over the regionally ranked Florida Southern Mocs, 2-0.

“Once again the proof is in the pudding, hard work equals positive results,” said head coach Giuseppe DePalo. “I’m proud of our boys, now we just have to keep it going.”

Aly Hassan (Sr., Weston, Fla.) scored all of the Sharks’ (7-4-2, 3-4 SSC) goals and reached a milestone in the NSU record books. His eighth and ninth goals of the season put his career totals at 34 goals and 83 points, making him the fifth player to cross 30 goals and 80 points in program history.

The first half was competitive but uneventful as neither team could take an early lead. Both teams took five shots a piece but the Sharks could not make a shot-on-goal. The NSU defense was in top shape as the half never seemed to be in the Mocs’ favor.

Hassan’s goal came within the first four minutes of the second period. Hassan dribbled into the penalty box, juked multiple defenders, and booted the ball into the top left corner of the net. It was his fourth game-winner of the season, one away from his career-high.

Florida Southern turned up the intensity after the goal and controlled the ball for the majority of the next 20 minutes. The Shark defense stood their ground and only allowed two shots-on-goal in the second half.

Hassan drove the nail in the coffin during the 80th minute with his ninth goal of the season. Juan Rivera (Jr., Miami, Fla.) earned his first assist of the season by completing a 20 yard pass to Hassan who only had the goalkeeper to beat. Hassan connected just outside of the box to seal the win.

Lyle Howe (So., Coral Springs, Fla.) picked up his seventh win and third shutout by making four saves in the match, two in each half.

The Sharks will stay on the road to play their final nonconference game of the regular season Saturday, Oct. 23 against West Florida at 7:30 pm.
