FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern men’s soccer team will look to end the regular season with a big win against the Lynn Fighting Knights at home Wednesday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m.
The Sharks will be attempting to rebound after their 1-0 regional loss to West Florida this past weekend. The Sharks took a three-match win streak into Pensacola but struggled to pile up shots-on-goal. With the clock winding down the Argonauts were given a penalty kick opportunity and converted.
There is plenty of incentive to pick up a fourth Sunshine State Conference victory as a spot in the conference tournament is on the line. A win would guarantee the Sharks a place in the SSC Tournament next week. Match that with a win or a tie by Florida Southern tomorrow and the Sharks will have a home match in the opening round on Nov. 2. A loss and a Florida Southern win or tie would end the careers of 10 senior Sharks. A loss for Lynn Wednesday would eliminate the Fighting Knights from postseason contention.
Wednesday night’s match has been circled on the calendar the entire season as there is unfinished business between the Sharks and the Fighting Knights. During the 2009 regular season the Fighting Knights handed the Sharks their worst loss of the season, taking down NSU by seven goals.
The loss could have killed NSU’s season, but the Sharks bounced back and qualified for the SSC Tournament. In the first round, NSU traveled to Lynn and eliminated them from the tournament on penalty kicks.
“A lot of the student-athletes who were involved in the conference semi final loss in 2007 on penalty kicks took a lot of satisfaction from that win,” said NSU assistant coach Matthew Parry.
With a spot in the post season on the line for both teams, NSU vs. Lynn XXXII promises to be as thrilling as their last match.
Since we became an NCAA institution our games with Lynn have always been highly charged, fought out encounters so we would not expect anything else this year,” stated Parry. “This year’s game we expect to be similar to the games in the past. It will be a tough, hard fought contest with a lot on the line, especially considering it is our last regular season game of the season, it being senior night and with a potential place in the conference tournament being at stake.”
