FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University women’s basketball team (5-1) is geared up and ready to head down to Miami to battle Florida Memorial on Wednesday, Dec. 1st at 7 p.m. at the A. Chester Robinson Athletic Center.
The Sharks are coming off a 1-1 weekend with a win over Western State (74-71) but suffered its first loss of the season to Metro State (58-51) in Denver, Colo. In the win against Western State, junior Quinessa Johnson (West Chester, Ohio) hit two crucial free throws with 56 seconds left to retake the lead and secure the victory.
The Sharks are averaging 70.3 points per game and holding their opponents to 61.3 ppg. NSU leads in every category on the stat sheet except for rebounds. Through six games, the Sharks and their opponent total are deadlocked at 250 apiece.
Senior center Stephanie Sarosi (Mims, Fla.) is averaging 16.3 ppg, 8.8 rebounds per game and 3.5 blocks per game to lead the Sharks early in the season. Junior Jada Buckner (Loudon, Tenn.) is second on the team in scoring and is right under double-digits with 9.8 ppg.
Sophomore Sabrina Stambouli (Quebec, Canada) has shot 56 percent on 5-for-9 from behind the arc, leading the team from the perimeter.
About Florida Memorial
The Lions are 2-3 in their first five games this season. They won in their last contest on Nov. 20 against the University of Puerto Rico 87-54 in their first home game of the year. The Lions opened their season with a lost to Xavier University of Louisiana (55-47) but rebounded with a win over Dillard University (81-77). They dropped their next two contents to Division I Bethune-Cookman (70-53) and Lynn (72-71) before its latest win over Puerto Rico.
Florida Memorial currently has two players who are averaging double digit points in Sudanne Stewart (17.6) and Daniella Howard (11.8). Howard is also the Lions top rebounder averaging 9.4 rpg.
The Lions average 68 points per game and hold their opponents to 66.
The Series vs. Florida Memorial
This is the ninth meeting between the two teams. The Sharks have a 7-1 lead in the series but have not played the Lions since 2002 when both teams were in the Florida Sun Conference.
