FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Feb. 10, 2010) - Nova Southeastern University women's basketball lost 50-42 to Lynn on Wednesday night during Homecoming at NSU Arena at the Don Taft University Center.
"To say tonight's loss was disappointing is an understatement," said head coach Marilyn Rule. "For us, it is time for a gut-check and a crash course in what it means to work hard.
NSU and Lynn remained within just a few points of each other throughout the low-scoring first half. The largest lead taken by either team was a six-point advantage by NSU. The Sharks went up 6-0 on a Rheisa Burke (Fr., Port Charlotte, Fla.) jumper at 13:22.
The remainder the half was a battle for control as there were four ties and six lead changes. With Lynn up 18-17, Stevie Kamp (So., Mesa, Ariz.) made a key free throw that evened the scored at 18-all at 1:07. The Fighting Knights regained a one-point edge on a foul shot by Cara Dolci. However, a jumper from Jada Buckner (So., Loudon, Tenn.) with 19 seconds allowed NSU to hold a 20-19 lead, which was the score heading into halftime.
After the two teams remained close to each other to start the second half, Lynn used an 8-0 run in order to go up by seven. A three-pointer from Natalie Basore at 11:59 is what capped the Fighting Knights' run and made it a 37-30 game.
The Sharks chipped away at Lynn's lead for the rest of the game. NSU came to within three on two occasions, including at 5:33 as a Kamp layup at 5:33 made it 41-38. However, that would be as close as the Sharks could get as Lynn hit a pair of treys, a layup and a foul shot in the final five minutes.
NSU shot 32.7 percent from the field and was 18-for-55. Lynn was 33.3 percent and made 20-of-60 shots. The Fighting Knights also held a 45-39 advantage in rebounds.
Erin Zampell (So., Naples, Fla.) had a team-high nine points. Kamp and Burke each pulled down a team-best six rebounds.
Chelsea Patterson recorded a game-high 14 points, while Quanisha Dixon grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
NSU returns to action on Saturday when the Sharks host Barry at 2 p.m. The game will also be NSU's WBCA/Pink Zone® game in which the first 200 fans will get a free shirt. Additionally, any donations made will split between the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund® and Susan G. Komen For The Cure®.
