Fort Lauderdale, Fla. (Feb. 13, 2010) - No. 23 Nova Southeastern University's women's tennis team won its Sunshine State Conference opener on Saturday by defeating Tampa 9-0 at the NSU Tennis Center at Rolling Hills. The Sharks improve to 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in the SSC, while Tampa falls to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the SSC.
NSU got the match started by taking all three doubles. Daria Egorova (Jr., Obninsle, Russia) and Justine Feaster (So. Escondido, Calif.) got past Kourtney Stark and Megan Mancini 8-6 at No. 1 doubles. Karolina Porizkova (Sr., Prostejov, Czech Republic) and Elisa Leeder (Sr., Eisenhuettenstadt, Germany) defeated Molly Welsh and Nikol Williams 8-2 in the No. 2 slot. At No. 3 doubles, Mary Crider (Sr., Georgetown, Texas) and Paige Lindsley (Jr., Albuquerque, N.M.) swept Ally Wooten and Briana Ryan 8-0.
In singles play, Egorova pulled out a win over Stark in three sets (6-4, 5-7, 10-8) at No 1. singles. Porizkova cruised past Williams 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 2 slot. At No. 3 singles, Leeder had a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Welsh. Feaster topped Mancini 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4 singles, while Crider swept Wooten 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 5 slot. Lindsley had a 6-3, 6-1 win over Ryan at the No. 6 slot.
NSU is on the road for its next two matches. The Sharks are back in action next Saturday at Florida Tech at 1:30 p.m.
