FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Feb. 17, 2010) - Nova Southeastern University women's basketball fell to Rollins 70-56 on Senior Day on Wednesday at the Don Taft University Center.
"We got a lot of good looks at the basket tonight, but our shots didn't fall," said head coach Marilyn Rule. "Converselyl, Rollins shot the ball very well. Erin Zampell, LaShawnna Edwards and of course Abbie Tepe were bright spots offensively, but we have to play better team defense and get on the boards better. We will bounce back and get ready for Florida Tech."
NSU (11-14, 4-10 Sunshine State Conference) had to contend with multiple runs by Rollins (17-7, 9-4 SSC) throughout the game, including one extremely early that provided the Tars with a 12-point, 16-4 lead at 15:38.
The Sharks were able to come to within seven points on three occasions during the first half, including at 11:24 as Zampell (So., Naples, Fla.) sank a pair of foul shots that made it 20-13. However, the Tars ultimately pushed their lead into double-digits and ended the first half with a 15-point 42-27 advantage.
In the second half, the Sharks saw Rollins push its lead to as many as 23 points as Kristina Mingos made a layup with 13:32 left to make it a 54-31 game. NSU gradually began to chip away at the deficit. Trailing by 20, a Edwards (Sr., Miami, Fla.) layup at 8:04 sparked an 11-2 run. A pair of free throws by Tepe (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) at 3:52 capped off the run pulled NSU to within 11 points as the Tars led 63-52. However, that would be as close as NSU could get for the rest of the game.
NSU shot 32.8 percent for the game, going 21-for-64. Rollins made 28-of-68 shots and was 41.2 percent from the field. Rollins held a slim edge in rebounding 45-40.
Zampell led a trio of Sharks in double-digit scoring. She tallied a game-high 16 points, which is also her season-high. Edwards scored 14 points, while Tepe had 11. Stevie Kamp (So. Mesa, Ariz.) grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Prior to the game, the Sharks honored Edwards, Tara Haddock (Sr., Citrus Springs, Fla.) and Lindsey Newpher (Sr., Depew, Okla.).
Kourtnie Berry led the Tars with 15 points. Amber Heistan recorded a game-high eight rebounds.
NSU hits the road for its final two regular season games. The Sharks travel to Florida Tech on Saturday. Tip off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
