Sharks improve record to 13-5

CLEVELAND, Miss. (Feb 28, 2010) - The Nova Southeastern softball team finished the Delta State Tournament with two wins on Sunday, taking their record to 3-1 in the DSU Tournament. The Sharks (13-5) took out the West Georgia Wolves (7-10), 4-3 followed by a win over the Delta State Lady Statesman (10-5), 2-1.

Dana Bergner (Sr., Palm Harbour, Fla.) had the game winning hit against the Wolves in the top of the seventh. The Sharks trailed for the majority of the game until Bergner batted two runs in with a game-winning double to right field. It was the second baseman's only hit of the day.

Jessica Hernandez (Sr., Miami, Fla.) came up big against the Lady Statesman and hit her first home run of the year. Hernandez's solo bomb came in the sixth inning and went over the left center fence. Hernandez also batted in her team's only other run with an infield single to third base in the opening inning.

Against the Wolves, NSU gave up two runs in the opening frame and did not climb back into the game until the final inning. NSU scored their first run in the second when Bergner was moved from first-to-home on walks and errors. They would cut into West Georgia's lead again in the sixth inning when Rachel Talenfeld (Jr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) hit an RBI single through the left side.

In the top of the seventh, Lauren Lopez (Sr., Miami, Fla.) and Brittney Lamb (Sr., West Palm Beach, Fla.) both had hits with one out on the board. Lamb would steal her second base of the year, putting two runners in scoring position and setting up Bergner's game winning double.

Devin Higginbotham (Jr., Palatka, Fla.) pitched her first complete game as a Shark in the win over West Georgia. She allowed eight hits and one walk while striking out four batters. She improved her overall record to 2-0.

In a defensive battle, The Sharks held onto a one run lead through five innings. During that stretch, the Shark defense was flawless and even made two putouts from the outfield to home plate. DSU scored their only run in the sixth inning but could not reach base in the final frame.

The Sharks did not commit any errors against the Lady Statesman. It was the third errorless game for NSU this season. In both games, The Sharks had less hits than their opponent.

Dani Caron pitched well and set up her team for their 13th win of the season. She pitched a seven hitter and only walked three batters. She had five strikeouts in the game, including three straight in the fourth inning. She raised her season record to a team-best 7-1.

The Sharks will return to the field this Friday to take on West Georgia in the West Georgia Tournament taking place in Carrolton, Ga.
