Fort Lauderdale, Fla. (Mar. 8, 2010) - No. 24 Nova Southeastern University fell to No. 9 West Florida 9-0 on Monday at the NSU Tennis Center at Rolling Hills.
In perhaps the day's most competitive match, Karolina Porizkova (Sr., Prostejov, Czech Republic) took No. 16 nationally-ranked Barbara Oliveira to three sets at No. 1 singles. Porizkova won the first set 6-4, but Oliveira took the second set 7-5 and the tiebreaker set 10-7 for the win.
The match started off with three West Florida (3-3) wins in doubles play. Taylor Brewster and Caitlyn Baines took No. 1 doubles 8-2 over Porizkova and Justine Feaster (So., Escondido, Calif.). At the No. 2 slot, Paulina Ojeda and Luiza Sunnervig defeated Mary Crider (Sr., Georgetown, Texas) and Paige Lindsley (Jr., Albuquerque, N.M.) 8-3, while Mariana Sonnervig and Oliveira had an 8-3 win over Blake Bauer (Fr., Miami, Fla.) and Federica Longo (Fr., Buenos Aires, Argentina).
In singles play, Ojeda defeated Feaster 6-3, 6-0 in the No. 2 slot. Brewster had a 6-2, 6-0 win over Bauer at No. 3 singles, while Luiza Sonnervig won 6-4, 6-0 over Crider at No. 4 singles. At No. 5 singles, Jacqueline March defeated Lindsley 6-4, 6-1, while Cammie Gray topped Longo 6-2, 6-2.
Monday's match was the start of a nine-match homestand for the Sharks (2-3). NSU is back in action on Tuesday when the Sharks host UNC Wilmington, a NCAA Division I program, at the NSU Tennis Center at Rolling Hills at 10 a.m.
