Coral Gables, Fla. (Apr. 10, 2010) - Nova Southeastern University men's and women's track and field teams each had individuals post impressive showings during Saturday's Hurricane Alumni Invitational.

Highlighting the day was Carlyle Thompson (Jr., Nassau Bahamas) meeting the NCAA Provisional Qualifying Standard in the 400-meter hurdles. Thompson, who finished second in the event, ran a school-record time of 52.30. The Provisional Qualifying Standard is 54.00. Thompson came close to the Automatic Qualifying Standard, which is 52.00.

The men's team also had six additional Top-10 finishes. In the 1,500 meters, both Joe Peña (Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.) and John Besharat (Jr., Miami, Fla.) used key kicks in the final 100 meters to finish fifth and sixth, respectively. Peña clocked 4:09.48, while Besharat ran 4:10.02. Also on the track, Brendan Chwalek (Fr., Sellersburg, Ind.) was eighth in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:04.59.

In the field, Edikan Nkan (So., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) was fourth and seventh in the discus and shot put, respectively. He registered a 125'7" (38.29m) launch in the discus and a 42'5.25" (12.93m) mark in the shot put. Mike Greiner (Fr., Palm Coast, Fla.) took eighth in the javelin with a time of 123'9" (37.72m).

For the women, Erin Zampell (So., Naples, Fla.) and Jessica Osteen (Fr., Las Vegas, Nev.) both came close to meeting the NCAA Provisional Qualifying Standards. Zampell just missed out on the standard for the javelin. She had a 131'2" (39.98m) throw that placed second and broke a school record, but missed the Provisional Qualifying Standard of 40.00m. Meanwhile, Osteen ran 57.80 in the 400 meters, missing the standard by exactly one second. Osteen's time broke NSU's 400-meter record and was eighth at the meet.

The women's team also saw a third record fall during Saturday's meet. Tamirah Bonaby (Fr., West Palm Beach, Fla.) finished 12th in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 14.88, becoming the first women's runner to go sub-15.00 in the event. She broke her own record of 15.44 from last month's Hurricane Invitational.

In addition to Zampell's second-place and Osteen's eighth-place finishes, the women had six more Top-10 performances - all of which were in the field. Brittany Watson (Fr., Indian Harbour Beach, Fla.) took third in the javelin with a throw of 114'11" (35.02m). She was also ninth in the discus with a mark of 106'11" (32.58m).
