Miami Shores, Fla. (Apr. 7, 2010) - No. 27 Nova Southeastern University women's tennis was swept by No. 4 Barry on Wednesday afternoon in what was the conference-finale for both teams.
The Sharks fall to 6-11 overall and 3-5 in conference play. NSU will be seeded sixth in next week's SSC Tournament. Meanwhile, Barry improves to 17-3 overall and 8-0 in conference play and will be the top seed in the conference tournament.
In doubles play, Barbi Pocza and Yulia Kashelkina, who are ranked sixth nationally, defeated Elisa Leeder (Sr., Eisenhuettenstadt, Germany) and Paige Lindsley (Jr., Albuquerque, N.M.) 8-0 in the No. 1 spot. At No. 2 doubles, Mia Fiocaa and Berit Peterson had an 8-3 win over Karolina Porizkova (Sr., Prostejov, Czech Republich) and Justine Feaster (So., Escondido, Calif.). Angie Werschel and Julie Stas pulled out an 8-6 win against Mary Crider (Sr., Georgetown, Texas) and Federica Longo (Fr., Buenos Aires, Argentina) at No. 3 doubles.
NSU faced three Buccaneers that are nationally ranked during the singles competition. Barbi Pocza, ranked fifth, defeated Leeder 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. 12th-ranked Werschel had a 6-1, 6-2 win over Porizkova in the No. 2 slot, while 40th-ranked Kashelkina defeated Lindsley 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) in the No. 3 position. Wendling had a 6-1, 6-0 win over Feaster at No. 4 singles, while Peterson defeated Crider 6-0, 7-5 at No. 5 singles. In the No. 6 slot, Stas defeated Longo 6-1, 6-3.
The regular season concludes on Saturday for the Sharks when they travel to No. 34 Palm Beach Atlantic. Match time is scheduled for 9 a.m.
