Darryl Gordon scores two goals in Sharks second SSC defeat

Box Score

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –
The Nova Southeastern men’s soccer team lost on a golden goal in the 96th minute against the Florida Tech Panthers at the NSU Soccer Complex Wednesday night, 3-2.

Despite the loss, Darryl Gordon (Sr., Miami, Fla.) scored both of the Sharks’ (4-2-2, 0-2-0 SSC) goals in the second half. It was his first multiple game goal since Sept. 9, 2007. Gordon now has three goals on the season.

The Sharks started the game in the pouring rain as remnants of Tropical Storm Nicole passed through South Florida. The Sharks fell into an early hole when the Panthers’ (4-4-0, 2-1-0 SSC) Gary Oglivie scored on a penalty kick in the sixth minute. The Shark offense struggled in the opening period as the rain kept both teams from controlling the pace of the match.

As the teams came out for the second half the storm lightened up and the Sharks were able push the tempo. NSU took 19 shots in the second half, over half the shot output in the opening period. In the 62nd minute, Juan Gonzalez (Sr., Oakland Park, Fla.) and Aly Hassan (Sr., Weston, Fla.) played the ball up the middle to Gordon who scored from 25 yards out.

Just 10 minutes later, Tim Taylor (Sr., Farmington Hills, Mich.) took a shot from the right side that bounced off the goalkeeper’s hands and into traffic. Gordon received the ball and scored inside the box from the left side. The Sharks led by a goal with a little over four minutes remaining when the Panthers tied the game with a goal off a header from Dean Faithfull inside the box. The Panthers would go on to score the golden goal in overtime when Nick Robinson scored off of a corner kick.

Despite the loss, the Shark offense was more potent as they outshot the opposition, 28-7. It was the most shots the Sharks have taken in a game all year. NSU also took a season-high 10 corner kicks.

The Sharks will look to rebound on the road this Saturday when they take on No. 14 Rollins at 6 pm.
