FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Despite the loss to Eckerd, the Nova Southeastern University women’s basketball team (10-4, 3-2 SSC) will look to record a win against Lynn University (7-8, 1-4 SSC) to start a season with 11 wins in 15 games for the first time in history. Both teams will face off on Wednesday, Jan. 19 at 5:30 p.m. in Boca Raton, Fla.
In the 2007-08 season, the Sharks started the season off 10-5 and eventually finished the year 24-7 an added their first SSC Championship in the process.
Regardless of the successful start this season, NSU’s downfall has been getting a victory on the road. The Sharks have recorded a 2-3 record overall and 0-2 in the SSC in away trips. Despite the record, the Sharks still manage to average 69.8 points per game.
Last week, Nova Southeastern defeated cross-town rival Barry, 80-71, on Jan. 12 in the NSU Arena in the Don Taft University Center but fell in St. Petersburg to Eckerd, 74-68, on Jan. 15.
The Sharks starters:
Stephanie Sarosi (Sr., Mims, Fla.),
Abbie Tepe (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio),
Jada Buckner(Jr., Loudon, Tenn.),
Quinessa Johnson (Jr., West Chester, Ohio) and
Jasmine Wilkins (Fr., Miami, Fla.) account for 68 percent of the teams total points a game.
Sarosi and Tepe still remain in the top-30 of the SSC standing with points scored with 17.4 (1st) and 8.5 (27th), respectively.
Defensively, Sarosi and Wilkins are the anchor of the Sharks defense as they rank among the best in blocked shots and rebounds.
About Lynn
The Fighting Knights, just like the Sharks, have been successful on their home court. Despite winning six of its seven games in the de Hoernle Sports and Cultural Center, Lynn has dropped its last four games.
The Fighting Knights average 59.8 points per game and hit 38.8 percent (329-for-849) of their shots.
Chelsea Patterson and Marquis Lee both tally double-digits with 15.1 and 12.7 points per game, respectively. Lee is also Lynn’s top rebounder, averaging 6.1 per game.
The Fighting Knights are a team that takes the ball to the basket instead of shooting from the outside. Hitting only 29 percent from behind the arc, Lynn hits a majority of their shots from inside the perimeter at 39 percent.
The Series vs. Lynn
The game will mark the 22nd meeting as the Fighting Knights currently have a 12-9 advantage over the Sharks. Last year, the Sharks won a thriller on Lynn’s home court walking away with a 67-66 victory on Jan. 6. The Knights took the second matchup, beating NSU 50-42 on Feb. 10.
