BOX SCORE
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern men’s soccer (3-5-1, 1-3-0 SSC) won its first home match of the season as they took down the Florida Southern Mocs (4-5-0, 1-3-0 SSC) Saturday in an overtime thriller, 3-2.
Halil Tozar (Fr., Berlin, Germany) came up big for his team with the biggest goal of his collegiate career, a golden goal in the 94th minute. He was set up by a great ball in the box from
Anthony Jack (Fr., Stevenage, England) and received the final pass of the night from
Tyree Clarke (Fr., Birmingham, England) before chipping it over the goalkeeper. It was Tozar’s second goal of the season.
The game did not appear as if it would go into overtime as the Sharks looked aggressive right out the gate and controlled the time of possession in the first half. NSU got on the board in the 27th minute when Clarke scored his second goal of the year.
Eric Tarmey (Fr., Pompano Beach, Fla.) came off the bench and almost immediately sent a great ball into the box to set up the easy score. It was Tarmey’s first career assist.
Zach Hofstetter, one of the nation’s top goal scorers, tied the match just before halftime when he got past goalkeeper
Andrea Giombetti (Fr., Rome, Itlay) for the open goal. Outside of the goal in the final minute of the half, the Sharks dominated the period as they outshot the Mocs 6-3 and totaled four shots-on-goal. Hofstetter took all of the Mocs’ shots in the first period and they were all on target.
James Pucci (Fr., Carrara, Italy) reestablished his team-lead in goals scored in the 74th minute when he put the Sharks up, 2-1, with his third goal of the season.
Phillip Klaus (Fr., Lippstad, Germany) created a great play out of a tough situation as he got around three defenders on the left side to get into the box and complete the pass to Pucci.
Less than two minutes later, Florida Southern evened the match again as Logan Albritton scored with a header in the box off a corner kick from Hofstetter. The Sharks controlled the ball for the rest of the second half but could not put the ball into the back of the net.
The Sharks maintained their aggression in the overtime period and did not let the Mocs set up their offense. Tozar took the only shot in the overtime period and converted to give the Sharks their first win in Sunshine State Conference play.
Giombetti (3-2-1) picked up four saves in the match en route to his third victory. The starting defense of
Alvin Quaye (Sr., West Ham, England),
Juan Rivera (Sr., Miami, Fla.),
Simon Nett (So., Grimstad, Norway) and
Cory Harbinson (Jr., Delray Beach, Fla.) are now 3-0 on the season.
Next up for NSU will be a road match against Eckerd this Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m.
