FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern men’s soccer team (3-6-1) is set for a weekend non-conference match against the Christian Brothers Buccaneers (7-3-0) this Sunday, Oct. 9 at the NSU Soccer Complex. The game, originally schedule for 1 p.m., has been moved back to noon.
The Sharks are coming off a shocking loss to Eckerd this past Wednesday, only the third loss to the Tritons in program history. The Sharks went down 2-1 while
Halil Tozar (Fr. Berlin, Germany) scored his team’s only goal. Although NSU got out to a very slow start, the team controlled the second half but allowed Eckerd to score with less than 15 minutes left.
In order for the Sharks to maintain their streak of six straight Sunshine State Conference tournament appearances, the longest current streak in the SSC, they may need to win all three of their remaining conference matches. That road starts next Wednesday against No. 5 Rollins at home. However, a win this Sunday against Christian Brothers is needed to build momentum for that run.
Christian Brothers enters the weekend with a solid 7-3-0 record with wins against No. 11 Montevallo and Harding. They have yet to play a Gulf South match as they finish the regular season with all five of their conference competitions. Before they face the Sharks, they’ll have to get through No. 19 Florida Tech Friday night. That match will be played at the NSU Soccer Complex, giving the coaching staff the advantage of seeing the Bucs play before Sunday’s match.
The Sharks have had a short but successful history against Christian Brothers as they are 2-0-0 all time against the Bucs. Last season, the Sharks travelled to Memphis, Tenn. and battled to a 2-1 overtime victory to begin the 2010 season. Former Shark Aly Hassan scored both goals for the Sharks while
Simon Nett (So., Grimstad, Norway) picked up an assist in his collegiate debut.
Another storyline that continues to develop is the chase for the SSC Freshman of the Year award. Tozar,
Tyree Clarke (Birmingham, England),
Phillip Klaus (Fr., Lippstad, Germany) and
Andrea Spuntarelli (Rome, Italy) all have a shot at this year’s award. Their biggest outside competition is Drake Hillman of Florida Tech, who has a slim lead in points among freshman. All one of them will need is a break out game in which they score multiple goals. Klaus is the only freshman on the team who’s scored multiple goals in a match as he knocked in two against Barry.
