BOX SCORE
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern men’s soccer team (3-7-1) dropped a non-conference match at home Sunday against the Christian Brothers Buccaneers (9-3-0), 2-1.
Matthew Ilter (So., Lake Mary, Fla.) scored his team’s only goal in the 75th minute. Down 1-0, the Sharks were fouled just outside the right side of the penalty box.
Juan Rivera (Sr., Miami, Fla.) sent the free kick into the box for Ilter to chip in the tying score. It was Ilter’s second goal of the season and Rivera’s first assist.
The first half was an even battle in which the Sharks were the more aggressive team. CBU outshot the Sharks, 7-5, but NSU had clearer shots at the goal early in the match as three out of five shots were on target. Regardless, the Bucs entered the break on top as Jose Ferraz scored with five minutes left in the period.
The Bucs switched gears at the start of the second half as they focused on defending their one-goal lead. The Sharks struggled at first but eventually began to crack the Buccaneer defense. With 15 minutes remaining, Ilter put the Sharks on the board but the lead would not last long. Six minutes later, Ferraz would score for the second time as the NSU defense attempted to clear the ball out of the box but allowed Ferraz to score an unassisted goal within 10 yards of the goalkeeper.
The Sharks battled hard to the end and almost tied the match within the last minute.
Phillip Klaus (Fr., Lippstad, Germany) took his team’s final shot in the box but it was barely blocked by CBU.
Cory Harbinson (Jr., Delray Beach, Fla.) took a corner kick with just seconds on the clock but the Sharks could not convert as they took their first loss against the Bucs in program history.
The Sharks will return to the NSU Soccer Complex this Wednesday, Oct. 12 to face No. 5 Rollins at 7 p.m.
