FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. The Nova Southeastern women’s basketball team (1-1) will look to keep its winning ways going Saturday when the Sharks host Concordia-St. Paul (2-0) at the NSU Arena. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.

NSU opened the 2011-12 season with a 1-1 record, dropping its opener to Valdosta State Friday, Nov. 11, but rebounded nicely in defeating Columbus State the next night, 78-69. The victory over the Lady Cougars gave new head coach LeAnn Freeland her first victory at the helm of the Sharks’ program.

Freshman Danielle Robinson (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) dropped in 18 points in her first collegiate game and then followed with a 23-point performance the next night. Her 20.5 points per game average is second in the Sunshine State Conference. Meixandra Porter (Jr., Chantilly, Va.) is the second-leading scorer for the Sharks after the first weekend of play with 13.5 ppg.

Jasmine Wilkins (So., Miami, Fla.) and Quinessa Johnson (Sr., West Chester, Ohio) are both having solid starts this season. Wilkins is leading the team in rebounds per game with a 9.5 average and chipping in seven ppg. Johnson is the third-leading scorer at 7.5 ppg and is grabbing 8.5 boards each contest.

The Golden Bears make the trip to the Sunshine State after opening the season with wins over Regis (72-45) and UC-Colorado Springs (65-56). Concordia will take on Barry Friday evening and then head to Fort Lauderdale to face the Sharks Saturday afternoon.

“Concordia is a well-coached team with size and strength,” said coach Freeland of the Golden Bears. “Since we are an under-sized team, it will be very important for our players to use our athleticism to apply suffocating ball pressure, play correct post defense on the block and rebound on both ends. I expect the game to be very physical for 40 minutes.”

Carissa Wolyniec paced Concordia in scoring in each of its first two games, scoring 17 against Regis and 14 against UC-Colorado Springs. Jodi Batzel, a NSIC All-Freshmen team selection a season ago, is also averaging double-digit scoring with 11 ppg.
