MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Playing on slippery courts from the morning’s rain in colder than usual temperatures, the Nova Southeastern University tennis team (1-0) defeated the St. Thomas Bobcats, 7-2, on Saturday, Feb. 12.
“It was a good win for us today,” head coach Michael Coleman said. “St. Thomas has a really good team this year.”
The Sharks rolled by the Bobcats in doubles play, only allowing seven total points combined in all three matches. NSU’s No. 3 doubles team of
Paige Lindsley (Sr., Albuquerque, N.M.) and sophomore
Austin Lavallii (Williamston, Mich.) had the only shutout for the Sharks with an, 8-0, victory.
Juniors
Dominique Wimmer (Guntramsdorf, Austria) and
Justine Feaster (Carrollton, Texas) recorded an 8-1 victory. The freshmen duo of
Kamryn Blackwood (Farmington, N.M.) and
Daria Burobina (Moscow, Russia) pulled out an 8-6 win in the No. 2 slot.
“Our doubles play really helped us today,” Coleman said. “Being able to secure the first three points put us in a good position at the beginning of singles play.”
In singles action, freshman Burobina celebrated her Shark’s singles debut with a two set victory in the No. 2 spot, defeating Manuela Gil (6-1, 6-1). Sophomore Bauer also rolled past her No. 6 opponent today (6-1, 6-1).
Senior
Oksana Krutiyenko (Nova Kahovka, Ukraine) won her match in the five spot after losing the first game (0-6, 6-0, 6-1). Lindsley also collected a win for the Sharks (6-4, 6-4), helping towards the NSU win.
“We got in the hole at the beginning, but it was good to see our players show some fight and pull out the singles victories that we needed,” coach Coleman said.
Maria Beatrice Giovanardi and Ydsia Quintero posted the two victories for the Bobcats.
