Sharks Held to Under Nine Hits For the First Time this Season

Box Score

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –
The Nova Southeastern baseball team (5-1) took its first loss of the season Wednesday evening at the NSU Baseball Complex as they fell to the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish, 3-2.

Despite the loss, Areo Regoli  (Jr., Homestead, Fla.) followed up his six RBI performance against Barry with a leadoff home run over left centerfield in the seventh inning. Regoli’s third home run of the season brought the Sharks within one run of the Sailfish.

In his first start of the season, Sean Tighe (Jr., Hobe Sound, Fla.) (0-1) picked up the loss after allowing three runs, only one of which was earned, over six innings. Tighe struck out five while allowing five hits and no walks. PBA’s Logan Thomas (1-0) earned the win by striking out seven and limiting the Sharks to three hits over six innings.

The Sailfish established their lead in the third inning and never gave it up. The Sharks committed two errors at the start of the third, putting two runners in scoring position with no outs. On the next at bat, the umpire sent a runner home when he called a balk on Tighe. After the run, PBA’s Luis Mejia grounded out to shortstop Luis Penate (Sr., Miami, Fla.) which plated the second run.

Thomas carried a no-hitter through 4.2 innings before freshman Carlos Asuaje (Weston, Fla.) put a hit and a run on the scoreboard. The Sharks started the inning with back-to-back swinging strikeouts before Ray Navarro (Jr., Miami, Fla.) took a free base. Asuaje sent Navarro home with a double to right centerfield.

PBA’s Yogi Gunther put his team back up by two runs with a leadoff homer to left field. Regoli’s bomb cut NSU’s deficit to a run but the Sharks never tied the game. The Sharks had the tying runner in scoring position in both the seventh and eighth inning. Asuaje flied out with Michael Hartley (Sr., Davie, Fla.) on third base in the seventh before Penate and Dusty Maggs (Sr., Satellite Beach, Fla.) struck out with Andrew Durden (Sr., Port St. Lucie, Fla.) on second. The Sharks went three-up-three-down in the bottom of the ninth, sealing their first loss of the season.

Nick Avila (Sr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) (1-0) pitched well in relief as he struck out five and allowed three hits over three innings.

The Shark offense struggled against the Sailfish as the top of the lineup went 1-for-11 with no runs. This is the first game this season in which the Sharks combined for less than nine hits.

The Sharks will take a week off before returning to the NSU Baseball Complex on Friday, Feb. 18 at 6 p.m. to begin a weekend series with Valdosta State
