FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern baseball team (23-12) will have a chance to seal a season series victory over the Florida Tech Panthers (23-13) on Tuesday, April 12 in Melbourne, Fla. at 3 p.m.
The Sharks are coming off a weekend that did not go in their favor as they lost to the then ranked No. 14 Barry Buccaneers in close fashion. On Friday night, the Sharks and Bucs played an epic 13-inning marathon which marked the longest game during the program’s NCAA era. The Sharks were close to winning in walk-off fashion twice as the Sharks were called out at the plate in the ninth and 12th innings. The Sharks would go on to lose the game, 4-3. Due to the doubleheader split on Saturday, the difference between winning and losing the series came down to a perfect throw from left field to home plate in the 12th inning Friday evening.
Although the series loss dropped NSU to fourth in the Sunshine State Conference, the Sharks proved they are neck-and-neck with the top team in the conference. They are now 2-2 on the year against the Bucs with one more game remaining against Barry on the road on April 19. A win will give the Sharks more leverage in the regional polls.
The Sharks are in the same situation with the Panthers as they are currently 2-2 against them. The Sharks dropped a heart-breaker in an out-of-conference game, 6-5, on Feb. 22 before losing an error-plagued game at home, 12-5, on March 18.
Down 0-2 on the season against the Panthers, the Sharks needed to win three straight against FIT in order to claim the season series victory. The Sharks answered the call by claiming the most lopsided victory in program history, 23-1. It was the most runs the team had ever scored in an SSC contest. Every starter scored at least once while all but one recorded a RBI. On the other hand,
Nick Avila (Sr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) pitched the finest game of his career as he threw a complete game one-hitter. The Sharks would follow up in the backend of the doubleheader with a 6-3 victory.
In order to gain leverage in the region, the Sharks will need to win Tuesday in order to take the season series. Currently, the Sharks still have a chance to hold a winning record against all but one of their regional opponents this season, a feat the program has never accomplished.
Senior centerfielder
Andrew Durden (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) will come in handy against FIT. In four games, Durden is batting .357 with six runs and seven RBI.
Carlos Asuaje (Fr., Weston, Fla.) and
Nikko Echevarria (Jr., Abqaib, Saudi Arabia) have also had positive results against the Panthers. Asuaje has scored nine runs over four games while Echevarria holds a .727 on base percentage.
