No. 20 Women’s Tennis Loses to No. 11 Florida Southern in First Round of SSC Tourney

Sharks Fall to Florida Southern for Second Time This Season

MATCH RESULTS

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla.
–The No. 20 Nova Southeastern University women’s tennis team (9-10) fell to the No. 11 Florida Southern (16-4), 5-1, in the quarterfinal round of the Sunshine State Conference Tournament on Thursday, April14 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

The duo of Paige Lindsley (Sr., Albuquerque, N.M.) and Daria Burobina (Fr., Moscow, Russia) teamed up for the second time this season in doubles and captured their second win as a team this season. The duo defeated Crystal Copeland and Pamela Paradis, 8-1, in the No. 3 spot.

The Sharks struggled to find their rhythm in their other two doubles matches. Justine Feaster (Sr., Carrollton, Texas) and Austin Lavallii (So., Williamston, Mich.) got off to a slow start and could never recover, eventually falling to Veronika Kovacikova and Joalis Dominguez, 8-3, in the No. 2 spot. Kamryn Blackwood (Fr., Farmington, N.M.) and Oksana Krutiyenko (Sr., Novo Kahovka, Ukraine) held their own against the 16th ranked duo Agnese Rozite and Sabine Goge early in the No. 1 doubles match, but lost all their momentum in the middle of the match to fall 8-3.

In a tournament where the first team to five points wins the match, the Sharks needed to win four of their six doubles matches for the victory.

In singles, Burobina faced No. 32 Goge in the No. 2 spot. The freshman battled hard in the first set, but fell late in the set to fall, 6-3. Rattled by the first set defeat, Burobina lost her rhythm and lost to Goge, 6-3, 6-0. Lindsley fell behind quickly in both of her sets and could never recover, losing to Joalis Dominguez in the No. 4 spot, 6-2, 6-3.

Dominique Wimmer (Jr., Guntramsdorf, Austria) met No. 31 Rozite in the No. 1 singles match and battled in the first set before slipping late in the match to fall, 6-4. Wimmer was able to stay with Rozite in the beginning of the second set, but lost all momentum after her second point, eventually losing to Rozite, 6-4, 6-2.

Blake Bauer (So., Miami, Fla.), Lavallii and Krutiyenko did not finish their singles matches due to the five points posted by the Mocs. Bauer had a 4-1 lead in her third set when play was stopped while Krutiyeno was leading her match 1-0.

The Sharks will face No. 50 Tampa in the second round backdraw match to try to earn another regional win on Friday, April 14 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs at 9 a.m.
