FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –The No. 20 Nova Southeastern University women’s tennis team (9-9, 4-4 SSC) fell to the No. 4 Barry Buccaneers (17-1, 7-1 SSC), 9-0, in its final home match on Thursday at the NSU Tennis Complex.
Before the match,
Paige Lindsley (Sr., Albuquerque, N.M.),
Justine Feaster (Sr., Carrollton, Texas) and
Oksana Krutiyenko (Sr., Novo Kahovka, Ukraine) were honored in the annual senior day activities.
Lindsley and
Austin Lavallii (So., Williamston, Mich.) went back and forth in their No. 3 doubles match with Alex Gwizdowski and Caroline Wendling, but lost momentum at the end of the match, losing 8-6.
Daria Burobina (Fr., Moscow Russia) and Feaster were able to compete in the early stages of their doubles match against Olivia Matuszak and Julie Stas, but could not withstand a late charge from Barry and fell, 8-4, in the No. 2 spot.
Krutiyenko and
Kamryn Blackwood (Fr., Farmington, N.M.) got down early in No.1 doubles and never recovered. The duo fell to Barbi Pocza and Laura Boquet, 8-3, to round out doubles play.
In singles, Lindsley battled back and forth in the first set against Stas in the No. 4 spot. Stas was able to find her rhythm late in the set and prevailed, 6-4, in the first set. Rattled by the first set defeat, Lindsley struggled in the second set and lost, 6-4, 6-2.
Burobina met eight ranked Pocza in the No. 1 spot, but never found her swing during the match and lost, 6-1, 6-1. In a last second change before the match Feaster faced Matuszak in No. 2 singles. Feaster took many of her games down to the wire, but could never finish off Matuszak, eventually falling, 6-2, 6-1.
Krutiyenko got off to fast starts in both of her sets, but lost momentum in the middle of the sets against Wendling and fell, 6-2, 6-2.
Federica Longo (So., Buenos Aires, Argentina) and Lavallii got down early in their singles matches and were never able to bounce back. Longo fell to Gwizdowski, 6-1, 6-1, in the No. 5 spot while Lavallii lost to Mona Mansour, 6-0, 6-1.
The Sharks finished out the regular season with records of 4-7 at home, 3-0 on the road and an even 2-2 at a neutral site.
NSU takes six days off before heading to Orlando, Fla. for the Sunshine State Conference tournament beginning on April 14.
