BOX SCORE
MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University men’s soccer team (2-2-1, 0-1-0 SSC) almost pulled off the upset over No. 8 Barry (6-0-0, 1-0-0 SSC) but came up short as the Buccaneers scored the game-winner with 46 seconds left to win Saturday in Miami Shores, Fla., 3-2.
The Sharks led for the majority of the match as Barry was forced to play catch up. With just over five minutes remaining, Barry tied the match at 2-2 with a free kick in front of the box. With just under a minute to play, Barry’s Connor Randel scored the game-winner to crush NSU’s upset hopes.
The Sharks struck first as
Phillip Klaus (Fr., Lippstad, Germany) scored his first goal of the season to put the Sharks ahead. It was an unassisted goal in the 12th minute as he took the ball from the midfield, shook one defender and slid his shot past the goalkeeper into the left corner of the net. It was the Sharks’ first goal in a first period this season.
Barry’s Joong Kim scored the equalizer in the 29th minute as he received a cross directly in front of the goal and headed it in. It was the first goal NSU had allowed in almost two weeks.
Steffen Rau (Fr., Stuttgart, Germany) relieved starter
Andrea Giombetti (Fr., Rome, Italy) just before the score but went on to make key saves as the Bucs took nine shots in the first half. Rau finished the match with four saves.
The Sharks had plenty of chances to score and dominated the ball over the final 10 minutes of the first half but could not score as the match remained tied at 1-1 headed into the break.
With 30 minutes left in the match, Klaus struck again for his second career goal.
Tyree Clarke (Fr., Birmingham, England) had an opportunity to score but the Barry keeper attempted to clear the ball out. Klaus received it from 25 yards out and put a perfect ball over the defense and into the top right corner of the net. He is now the only Shark with multiple goals this season.
The Sharks led for the next 25 minutes as it appeared the defense would hold off one of the nation’s best offenses. With five minutes left, Barry’s Mark Anderson, the national leader in goals per match, scored off a free kick dead-center in front of the box. With less than a minute remaining, Barry clinched the match and remained undefeated.
The Sharks will take a break from conference play this Tuesday, Sept. 20 when the Sharks travel to Daytona Beach, Fla. to face Embry-Riddle at 7 p.m.
