Men’s Soccer Falls in Heartbreaker to No. 25 Saint Leo

Despite a two goal lead the Sharks were unable to secure the win late.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –
The Nova Southeastern men’s soccer team (2-4-1, 0-2-0 SSC) suffered its second consecutive heartbreaking defeat to a top-25 ranked Sunshine State Conference opponent, losing 4-3 (2OT) to No. 25 Saint Leo (5-1-0, 1-1-0 SSC).

With a 3-1 lead after James Pucci's (Fr., Carrara, Italy) goal at 79:06, the final minutes of regulation could not tick away fast enough for the Sharks before allowing two goals in the final 10 minutes.

Sean Mcfarlane scored both goals for Saint Leo with one finding the net at 83:36 and the game-tying goal reaching the net at 89:30.

After both teams played one-another tough for the first overtime, Joel Purkiss scored the game-winner for the Lions after receiving a cross from Bruno Da Silva within the first three minutes of the second overtime. 

Halil Tozar (Fr., Berlin, Germany) scored the first goal of the game for the Sharks at the 33:51 mark tying the game at 1-1, after receiving an assist from Pucci. 

After receiving a pinpoint lead pass from Andrea Spuntarelli (Fr., Rome, Italy), Matthew Ilter (So., Lake Mary, Fla.) scored the second goal of the game for the Sharks at 55:56,  placing the ball into the net just beyond the keeper's reach from the right side of the box. 

Mckenzey Scott (5-1-0) was credited with the win for Saint Leo after allowing three goals and making a save in 93 minutes in goal.

Steffen Rau (Fr., Stuttgart, Germany) (0-3-0) was credited with the loss for the Sharks after making four saves and allowing four goals in 102:55 minutes in goal.

The Sharks lost its previous conference game, 3-2, to No. 8 Barry, giving up two goals in the final 10 minutes of regulation also.

The Sharks play again at Lynn, on Wed, Sept., 28 at 3 p.m.
