FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern women’s basketball team (10-5, 3-3 SSC) will look to get back in the win column Saturday, hosting the Lions of Saint Leo (6-10, 0-6 SSC) at 2 p.m. in the NSU Arena at the Don Taft University Center.
On Wednesday, the Sharks rallied from a seven-point halftime deficit to tie Lynn during the final minute of play, but the Fighting Knights would get the winning bucket with 21 seconds left to knock off NSU.
Jasmine Wilkins (So., Miami, Fla.), who tallied 16 points on a 7-of-13 shooting effort, came up two rebounds short of her third double-double this season.
Rebounding has been a key factor in determining success for the Sharks this season, as NSU is 9-0 when dominating the glass, but are 1-4 when being outrebounded. The Fighting Knights grabbed eight more rebounds than the Sharks Wednesday.
“Our team is excited to get back on the court and put together a 40 minute team effort,” said head coach LeAnn Freeland. “Prior to every game, we discuss the importance of playing team defense and winning the rebounding battle. When we control the boards, we win.”
Danielle Robinson (Fr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and
Meixandra Porter (Jr., Chantilly, Va.), both in their first year at NSU, have created an offensive tandem that allows the Sharks to compete with any opponent. Both are averaging over 14 points per game and lead the Sharks in 3-point shots made. Robinson leads the way with 31 treys this season, while Porter has recorded 22 shots from long range.
After a promising 6-0 start, Saint Leo has struggled, losing 10 consecutive games. The Lions are winless since a Dec. 3 victory over Southeastern (Fla.). Saint Leo suffered a similar two-point loss to Lynn, 56-54, Dec. 31 to begin conference play, but have since lost five SSC contests by an average of 20.8 points.
Chelsea Williams leads the Lions in scoring with 12 ppg and is second on the team on the boards, averaging 6.2 rebounds per game. As a team, Saint Leo has struggled on the offensive end of the floor, averaging only 52.8 ppg, worst in the SSC.
“Even though Saint Leo has not won a game in the SSC this season, they have beaten worthy opponents outside of conference action and have battled right with some of the best teams in our league,” commented Freeland. “It will be important for our team to come ready to play.”
