Freeland Earns 100th Career Victory; Women’s Basketball Topples Saint Leo, 74-45

Robinson netted six 3-pointers to tie the single-game NSU record.

BOX SCORE

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.  Danielle Robinson (Fr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Meixandra Porter (Jr., Chantilly, Va.) combined for 11 made 3-pointers to propel the Nova Southeastern women’s basketball team (11-5, 4-3 SSC) past Saint Leo (6-11, 0-7 SSC), 74-45. The victory gave head coach LeAnn Freeland her 100th career victory.

The first 13 minutes of the game were closely contested. Robinson opened the game with her first trey 30 seconds in, but Chelsea Connelly responded on the other end with one for the Lions. Saint Leo held a 22-19 lead at the 7:30 mark, before the Sharks took over.

Richelle Carach (So., Naples, Fla.) opened up what would turn into a 25-2 run to end the half for NSU with a layup out of a Sharks’ timeout. Robinson would tally eight points during the run, including hitting a pair of triples. Porter knocked down a trey of her own with 2:31 left in the half before Taylor Kramer (Fr., Fort Myers, Fla.) sank a baseline jumper to send the Sharks to the break with a 44-24 advantage.

Robinson finished the first half 6-of-7 from the field with five 3-pointers. Her 18 points were the most any Shark has scored in a half this season. Porter contributed three 3-pointers in the half to give NSU a shooting percentage of 57.1 (8-of-14) from behind the arc, also a team-best in a half this season.

The Lions scored the first two buckets of the second half, but Porter responded with another basket from long range off a Jasmine Wilkins (So., Miami, Fla.) offensive rebound.

Robinson hit her sixth 3-pointer of the game with 12:32 left to play, equaling the NSU single-game record. This is the second time during her freshman campaign that she has recorded six 3-pointers in one game.

NSU’s largest lead, 34-points, came after Jada Buckner (Sr., Loudon, Tenn.) hit a pair of free throws to push the score to 67-33. The Lions continued to challenge the Sharks, going to a full court press for the last 10 minutes of play, but they made only a small dent in the Sharks lead.

Rheisa Burke (So., Port Charlotte, Fla.) hit a pair from the charity stripe with a minute left and Emiliya Yancheva (Sr., Sofia, Bulgaria) sank a late layup to give NSU its fourth conference win this season.

Robinson finished with a game-high 21 points, while Porter added 17. Wilkins recorded her third double-double this season with 11 points and 11 boards, grabbing seven on the offensive end, which helped NSU tally 23 second-chance points.

The Sharks improved to 10-0 this season when outrebounding its opponent, securing 40, while the Lions registered only 33. NSU will head out on the road for its next two games, visiting Rollins Wednesday, Jan. 25 and then rival Barry Saturday, Jan. 28 to close out January.
