FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern women’s basketball team (11-5, 4-3 SSC) will look to hand No. 10 Rollins (14-2, 6-1 SSC) its second conference loss when the squads take the court Wednesday evening in Winter Park, Fla. Tip-off at Warden Arena is slated for 5:30 p.m.
The Sharks are coming off one of their most statistically successful games of the season in their 74-45 defeat of Saint Leo over the weekend. Head coach LeAnn Freeland was able to earn her 100th career victory thanks to an efficient offense that produced 20 assists on 25 field goals.
Jessica Russi (So., Lake Mary, Fla.) dished out a game- and career-high seven assists, helping four of her teammates reach double digits in points.
Danielle Robinson (Fr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) led the way with 21 points, draining six 3-pointers to tie the NSU single-game record.
Meixandra Porter (Jr., Chantilly, Va.) added five treys and three steals.
As a team, the Sharks set a new program record with 13 made triples against the Lions. Replicating that success Wednesday will be a tough task as the Tars currently sit atop the SSC standing and are ranked 10th nationally.
Wednesday’s matchup is shaping up to be a defensive battle. Rollins has played exceptionally well on the defensive end of the floor, allowing a conference-low 52.2 points per game, which has given way to a conference-best +13.8 scoring margin over its opponents. The Sharks have had almost similar success in both categories, holding opponents to 55.9 ppg and outscoring opponents by 11.1 points, good for third in the SSC in both categories.
The Tars are coming off their first conference loss of the season, a 64-62 defeat at Florida Tech. Rollins struggled from beyond the arc, hitting only 3-of-17 (17.6 percent) attempts from long range.
On the offensive end, Rollins operates as a balanced unit with five student-athletes scoring at least seven ppg, including two players off the bench. NSU, conversely, is receiving 43 percent of its offensive production from its first-year backcourt of Robinson (14.9 ppg) and Porter (14.3 ppg).
This game represents only the fifth time this season that NSU will play a road contest, going 2-2 so far. At home or away, holding a lead at halftime and leading the way on the glass have been definitive factors in winning games for the Sharks. NSU is 9-0 when leading at the intermission and 10-0 when outrebounding its opponents in Freeland’s first season at the helm of the women’s basketball program.
