BOX SCORE
MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern women’s basketball team (11-7, 4-5 SSC) held a 13-point lead with less than nine minutes to play, but the Barry Buccaneers (12-6, 7-2 SSC) ended the game on 19-1 run to capture a 47-42 win Saturday afternoon.
Each team struggled from the field early, shooting under 25 percent for the first eight minutes of the game.
Jasmine Wilkins (So., Miami, Fla.), who opened the game 0-for-5 for NSU, got on the board when she converted a heavily contested layup on the break and drew the foul. She dropped in the free throw to give the Sharks a 10-6 advantage.
The Bucs came out of the second media timeout and notched two quick buckets, but
Danielle Robinson (Fr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) gave the Sharks the lead back immediately with three points from downtown. Wilkins gave NSU its largest lead of the half, 19-14, laying the ball in for two on the break off a
Jada Buckner (Sr., Loudon, Tenn.) block on the defensive end.
After the cold start, Wilkins converted on three straight attempts. Her final basket of the half came in the form of a 10-foot jumper with 55 seconds left. With the bucket, NSU took a 21-18 lead into the locker room at the half.
Both squads struggled to improve their shooting percentages, converting on right around 29 percent of their respective attempts. Wilkins led all scorers with seven at the break, while Alexandria Zamora recorded six for the Bucs.
Wilkins picked up where she left off after the break, converting on her first attempt of the second half. She then notched an assist on the Sharks’ next possession, hitting
Meixandra Porter (Jr., Chantilly, Va.) under the hoop for an easy two and putting the Sharks ahead by five.
Barry responded with a 6-0 run, capped by a Yvonne Houston basket that put the Bucs ahead for the first time since the 17:15 mark in the first half when they led 4-3. The Sharks did not trail for long, as
Quinessa Johnson (Sr., West Chester, Ohio) and Robinson hit back-to-back 3-pointers to swing the score back in NSU’s favor, 31-28.
NSU continued the intensity on the defensive end with Wilkins and Johnson each swatting away Barry attempts. Porter turned those stops into points on the other end, scoring buckets on consecutive Shark possessions to give NSU a 39-28 lead.
The Bucs burned a timeout with just under nine left to play, but Porter continued to score, this time off her own steal. Porter’s fast break layup finished off a 16-2 Sharks’ run, before Danielle DeBerry hit a 3-pointer for the Bucs. After another DeBerry trey, the Sharks called a timeout of their own with 6:44 on the clock, still leading 41-34.
As the Sharks’ offense continued to sputter, Barry’s continue to click, as a 15-0 run of their own put the Bucs ahead 43-41 with just under a minute left in regulation. DeBerry went 4-of-4 from the free throw line down the stretch and the Bucs held on for a 47-42 victory. The Sharks’ offense that had built a 13-point advantage was held without a field for the final 8:38 of the game, scoring only one more point on a
Richelle Carach (So., Naples, Fla.) free throw with under 10 seconds to play.
Zamora recorded a double-double, scoring a game-high 14 points and grabbing 10 boards for the Bucs. Wilkins paced the Sharks with 11 points, while Porter added 10.
The loss marked the first time this season the Sharks have fallen when outrebounding their opponent. NSU registered 46 rebounds, while the Bucs snagged 41. It was also the first time this season the Sharks lost after holding a lead at halftime. NSU was previously 9-0 when leading at the intermission.
