FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –
The Nova Southeastern women’s basketball team (5-0) used a big run to end the first half to gain another victory on Sunday, 85-46 over Alabama-Huntsville (3-2) from the NSU Arena at the Don Taft University Center.

The game was tied at 20-20 at the 10:23 mark of the first half, but back-to-back three-pointers by Taylor Buie (Fr., Puyallup, Wash.) sparked a 16-2 run for the Sharks. They actually ended the half by outscoring the Chargers 25-7 to take a 45-27 lead into the locker room.

“Going into the game, we weren’t expecting a 2-3 zone, so it threw us off-balance early,” said head coach LeAnn Freeland. “But I thought we adjusted well to it, and it always helps when you knock down 15 ‘threes.’”

That mark sets a new program record for the Sharks, breaking the 13 they hit against Saint Leo last season, on Jan. 21. Buie made four as part of her career-high 18, and the Sharks were led by Amanda Burakoski (Jr., Brooklyn, N.Y.), who had four as well, while setting a new NSU career standard of her own with 20 points.

“We’re a team that has everybody that can shoot the ball,” said Freeland. “It was really exciting for me to see all that hard work pay off, because we are a dedicated group on the court getting those shots up, and we really hadn’t shot the three-ball well before today.”

Joining that duo in double digits were Meixandra Porter (Sr., Chantilly, Va.) with 15, and Danielle Robinson (So., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), who had 13. Richelle Carach (Jr., Naples, Fla.) had the team high in rebounds with nine, while Tailor Jones (Sr., Altamonte Springs, Fla.) led all players with eight assists.

The undefeated Sharks are now off for 13 days, as they next travel to play Sunshine State Conference foe Saint Leo on Dec. 1.

“As a coach, I always find things that we can improve on,” said Freeland. “I think rebounding is something we need to take control of, and we haven’t seen a lot of man-to-man defense yet, so there’s certainly a lot of things to work on. But (being 5-0) is definitely a great place to be.”
