WASHINGTON, D.C. –
The No. 17 Nova Southeastern women’s basketball team, behind four 3-pointers each from Danielle Robinson and Amanda Burakoski, defeated the University of the District of Columbia on Tuesday night, 78-50.

Robinson (So., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Burakoski (Jr., Brooklyn, N.Y.) combined for 41 points, each shooting 7-of-13 from the field. Robinson’s game-high 21 points included 4-of-6 shooting from behind the arc. Burakoski tied her NSU career high with 20, and was 4-of-8 from long range.

The Sharks (6-1, 0-1 SSC) broke open a close game early as Robinson hit two 3-pointers in the span of 28 seconds. Not to be outdone, Burakoski hit two straight of her own in 24 seconds’ time. After another Robinson ‘3,’ what was once a 17-11 lead had ballooned out to 32-13.

NSU led by 17 at the half, 39-22. UDC cut it to 11 early in the second half, but a 19-7 run pushed the margin past 20 with 8:45 left, and it stayed that way for most of the remainder of the contest.

While the Sharks shot extremely well against the UDC zone (12-of-31 from 3-point range, for 38.7 percent), their defense that returned to form as well. NSU forced 28 Firebird turnovers, and had 12 steals in the game. They also held UDC to 32.7 percent shooting from the field.

“Our loss at Saint Leo helped us regain our identity as a defensive team,” said head coach LeAnn Freeland. “In order for us to be successful, our players have to be disciplined and follow our game plan. It was a total team effort on the defensive end tonight.”

Khadejra Young (Fr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) was a perfect 4-of-4 from the field, setting a new career-high on the night with 10 points. Burakoski paced the team for the second straight game in rebounding, with seven, while Jessica Russi (Jr., Lake Mary, Fla.) was just one shy of her career-high set in this season’s opener, notching 11 assists on Tuesday.

Tatyana Calhoun led the Firebirds (4-5) with 15 points and nine rebounds.

The Sharks’ road trip continues with this weekend’s Shaw Classic. They face Fayetteville State Friday afternoon at 3 p.m., and then the hosts, the No. 13-ranked Shaw Bears, on Saturday at 5 p.m.

“Our next two games are against very good opponents,” said Freeland. “We have to start preparing now.”
