Saladrigas Throws No-Hitter; Softball Opens 2012 With a Pair of Shutouts

Sara DeMuth and Laura Saladrigas picked up wins in the circle.

GAME ONE BOX|GAME TWO BOX

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. The Nova Southeastern softball team (2-0) kept Webber International off the scoreboard through two games, as the Sharks took their season-opener, 3-0, and then followed with a 12-0 drumming of the Warriors in the second game of the doubleheader. The night was highlighted by a no-hitter in the second game by Laura Saladrigas (Jr., Hollywood, Fla.).

GAME ONE
Sara DeMuth (Sr., Plant City, Fla.) opened the season in the circle for the Sharks, recording a complete-game four-hit shutout. The senior, who earlier in the day won the Flo Hyman award, registered 10 strikeouts in the 3-0 victory for the Sharks.

After the teams went scoreless through the first two innings, the Sharks put the first run of the game on the board in the third. Jaimee Vega (Jr., Loxahatchee, Fla.) led off with a single to right field and was able to move up a base on the throw in. Melanie Spicola (So., Umatilla, Fla.) laid down a nice sacrifice bunt in the Sharks’ next at bat, moving Vega over to third.

Lorena Spaulding provided the first RBI of the season for NSU with a sacrifice fly to centerfield, as Vega tagged up and raced home.

Vega accounted for the Sharks second run of the game, this time in the fifth inning. After reaching on a fielders choice, Vega stole second to get into scoring position. Spicola beat out the throw in her next at bat to reach first safely. Vega, with a heads up play, made her way to home during the play and was able to slide in unscathed as the Warrior’s first basemen sent the ball high over the catcher’s head.

In the top of the sixth, Ashlee Quigley doubled for the Warriors, but DeMuth rang up three other batters to keep the shutout intact. Chelsea Emery (Jr., Eustis, Fla.) provided the Sharks with another tally, driving in Katie Kelton (Sr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.).

Both pitchers performed well in the opener, as DeMuth came away with the win, but Kiana Levy pitched five innings, allowing only two runs (one earned) and striking out five before taking the loss for WIU.

GAME TWO
The Sharks offense came alive early the second half of the doubleheader, racking up 12 runs in the first three innings. Saladrigas secured the victory for the Sharks, pitching a no-hitter in five innings of action.

NSU loaded the bases with the first three batters reaching safely in the bottom of the first. Gina Bondarenko (So., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) kept the bases juiced with an RBI single that drove in Kelton. Emery followed with a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Spicola.

Ashley Silveira (Jr., Miami, Fla.) capped the four-run inning with a shot to center that brought around Dani Millan (So., Ventura, Calif.) and Bondarenko.

The Sharks picked right back up in the bottom of the second, adding six more runs to the scoreboard. Kelton notched her first RBI of the season, hitting a double to right field that allowed Vega to score. A couple batters later, Bondarenko tallied her second RBI of the game, scoring Spicola on a single up the middle.

Later in the inning, Michelle Sarradet (Fr., Miami, Fla.) recorded the first RBI of her collegiate career, driving in Millan who had been hit by a pitch.

Saladrigas, who was throwing with good command from the circle, got into the action at the plate, driving in the second of two runs in the third for NSU.

With the mercy rule coming into effect, Saladrigas struck out the first two batters of the fifth inning and then got Cody Windham to ground out to short.

Saladrigas, Bondarenko, Sarradet and Vega each notched two hits for the Sharks. Bondarenko and Silveira led the Sharks with two RBI apiece, while Kelton led NSU with three runs scored.

NSU is next in action Saturday, Feb., 4 as they visit West Florida for a doubleheader.
