Tennis Wins Conference Opener Against Tampa

Sharks defeated the Spartans, 6-3.

. –  The No. 24 Nova Southeastern University tennis team (3-0, 1-0 SSC) upset the Tampa Spartans Saturday, Feb. 18, 6-3, after a strong showing in doubles play at the NSU Tennis Center

“It was a good win for us today,” head coach Michael Coleman said. “Our doubles play really helped us secure the first three points and put us in a good position at the start of singles play.”

In doubles play, NSU cruised past Tampa in all three matches, outscoring the Spartans 24-7. Senior Dominique Wimmer (Gunstramdorf, Austria) and No. 44 Alexandra Johansson (Fr., Sydney, Australia) defeated Lauren Hewett
and Meg Wladimirski in the No. 1 spot, 8-3. The next two points came from the undefeated doubles’ teams of Federica Longo (Jr., Buenos Aires, Argentina)/Daria Burobina (So., Moscow, Russia), and Austin Lavallii (Jr., Williamston, Mich.)/Charlotte Cote (Fr., Montreal, Canada). Longo/Burobina won (8-1), while Lavallii/Cote recorded an (8-3) victory.

In singles action, Wimmer picked up her first win of the season, defeating her opponent Thashia Garcia in the No. 1 spot, (6-1, 6-0). Johannson who is seeded No. 2, came out with a win against Hewett (6-1, 6-0).

The last point for NSU came from Kamryn Blackwood (So., Farmington, N.M.), who came out with a victory against Briana Ryan, playing in the No. 6 spot (6-2, 6-1).

Burbonia, Cote, and Longo all fell to their opponents in a tie-breaker, playing in the No. 3 through No. 5 spots, respectively. It was a close match for Burbonia, but she could not pull off the win, eventually falling to Wladimirski (3-6; 7-5; 8, 10). Cote was overthrown by Leslie Raymond (4-6; 6-4; 3, 10). Defeated by Megan Mancini, Longo held her scoreless in the second set, but ultimately fell in the tiebreaker (4-6; 6-0; 5, 10).

The Sharks continue their conference schedule tomorrow, Feb. 19, hosting Saint Leo at 2 p.m. at the NSU Tennis Center.
