FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern women’s basketball team (16-9, 8-7 SSC) will wrap up regular season play Saturday when it hosts No. 14 Rollins (20-5, 11-4 SSC) at the NSU Arena in the Don Taft University Center. The Sharks will honor their five seniors prior to tip-off, which is scheduled for 2 p.m.
Seniors
Emiliya Yancheva (Sofia, Bulgaria),
Ashley Day (West Palm Beach, Fla.),
Jessica Walter (Knoxville, Tenn.),
Quinessa Johnson (West Chester, Ohio) and
Jada Buckner (Loudon, Tenn.) will be recognized in a pregame ceremony for their contributions to the NSU women’s basketball program.
NSU has found its stride down the stretch, victors in its last four contests, including the last three on the road. The Sharks return home where they have went 10-4 this season in the Shark Tank.
The last time out, the Sharks defeated Lynn in Boca Raton, 66-56.
Jasmine Wilkins (So., Miami, Fla.) helped the Sharks get out to a halftime lead of six points, making her first five shots. Wilkins, who recorded 12 points in the game, was joined in double figures by
Jessica Russi (So. Lake Mary, Fla.), who tallied 15 points, and
Meixandra Porter (Jr., Chantilly, Va.) with 13, going 9-of-10 from the free throw line.
Rollins, who has been ranked nationally since Nov. 21 and has been slotted as high as seventh, has dropped to 14th in latest national poll. The Tars have dropped their past two games, falling at home to Florida Tech, 78-72, and at Barry, 71-66. It has been the only time this season Rollins has dropped back-to-back games.
Ashley Jones scored a team-high 16 points at Barry for Rollins and leads the team with 11.8 points per game. The Tars rebound the ball very well as a team, with four student-athletes grabbing at least four rebounds per contest.
NSU and Rollins met back on Jan. 25 in Winter Park, Fla. with the Tars taking down the Sharks, 66-52.
Danielle Robinson (Fr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) led all scorers with 16 in the game, hitting four 3-pointers, but the Sharks were defeated by the Tars efficient offense.
NSU is currently tied for fourth in the conference at 8-7 with Florida Tech, who plays at Tampa Saturday. Final seeding for the SSC Tournament which begins Wednesday, Feb. 29 will be finalized after the conclusion of today’s games. The top four seeds in the conference tournament will host a first round game before the action shifts to Lakeland, Fla. for the semifinals and finals.
