FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 24 Nova Southeastern women’s tennis team (4-1, 2-1 SSC) won in a close Sunshine State Conference match to No. 10 Florida Southern (1-4, 1-3 SSC), 5-4, on Saturday, Feb. 25 at the Beerman Tennis Courts in Lakeland, Fla.
Federica Longo (Jr., Buenos Aires, Argentina) and
Daria Burobina (So., Moscow, Russia) remain undefeated as a doubles team, beating Crystal Copeland and Jessica Cove, playing in the No. 2 spot, 8-4. No. 3 doubles team of
Kamryn Blackwood (So., Farmington, N.M.) and
Dominique Wimmer (Sr., Guntramsdorf, Austria) cruised past Christie Nunnemann and Laura Wichmann with a score of 8-3.
The No. 20 doubles team of Sabine Goge and Magda Riutort put Florida Southern on the board first with an 8-1 win in the top doubles spot versus
Alexandra Johansson (Fr., Sydney, Australia) and
Austin Lavallii (Jr., Williamston, Mich.).
The Sharks took a commanding lead of 3-1 when No. 44 Johannson defeated Goge in the top singles spot, 6-4, 6-2. Longo went three sets, defeating Copeland, in the No. 5 slot (6-3; 2-6; 7, 5).
NSU dropped three singles matches in the second through fourth spots. Playing in the No. 2 spot, Wimmer couldn’t hold off Riutort, losing, 6-4, 6-0. Joalis Dominguez defeated Burobina, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 3 singles. Nunnemann collected a three set win, (7-6; 2-6; 6, 3) versus Lavallii at the No. 4 spot.
NSU and Florida Southern were all tied up 4-4 with one singles match to go. The Sharks claimed the win when
Charlotte Cote (Fr., Montreal, Canada), who rallied after a first set loss, defeated her opponent Jill Doerfler in a tie-breaker (5-7; 6-2; 7, 5).
The Sharks continue their conference schedule tomorrow, Feb. 26 in Winter Park, Fla. playing against No. 9 Rollins.
