Baseball Records Third Win over West Alabama, 9-3

Sharks Win Weekend Series against the Tigers, 3-1.

BOX SCORE

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –
The Nova Southeastern baseball team (7-2) completed a four-game series against the West Alabama Tigers (7-7) with a 9-3 win Sunday at the NSU Baseball Complex.

Javi Sujo (Sr., Miami, Fla.) and Areo Regoli (Sr., Homestead, Fla.) both added to their home run total against the Tigers. Sujo went 3-for-5 with four RBI and a grand slam, while Regoli went 2-for-4 with a solo blast, two runs and two RBI. Chris Morales (Jr., Miami, Fla.) went 3-for-5 with two runs and a RBI. Morales would have reached base safely in all five plate appearances but UWA right fielder Josh Podoris made a diving catch to rob him of a hit.

Roberto Baroniel (Fr., Miami, Fla.) (1-0) made his first career start and earned his first victory. He pitched five innings, struck out four batters and held a groundball/flyout ratio of 5/3. After a rocky start, Baroniel looked good as he only allowed two hits over his last four innings pitched. After the fifth inning, the bullpen took over and did not give up a run.

The Tigers got on the board first with four hits in the opening inning, but could only produce one run. Sujo would put the Sharks on top on the other side with a grand slam over left centerfield. It was the first grand slam of the season for NSU and the second home run of the season for the first baseman. Morales started the rally with a single while Regoli and Daniel Petitbon (Sr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) each drew walks to load the bases.

West Alabama would bring the deficit to one run in the third, but the Sharks slowly rebuilt a comfortable lead. In the fourth inning, Blake Boyd (Jr., Jupiter, Fla.) hit a double down the right field line and eventually scored off Morales’ third straight single.

NSU poured three more runs onto their lead in the seventh, beginning with a leadoff home run over the left centerfield fence from Regoli. It was his fifth home run of the season and third of the series. The next four batters would reach base safely, with two eventually scoring off a wild pitch and a passed ball.

The Sharks put the cherry on top in the eighth inning when Regoli picked up another RBI on a double to centerfield that scored Morales. The Sharks came close to scoring in double digits for the fifth time in nine games, but stranded two runners on base. Sean Tighe (Sr., Hobe Sound, Fla.) closed the game in a non-save situation and kept the Tigers scoreless.

The Sharks will return to the NSU Baseball Complex this Tuesday in a rematch against Barry at 6 p.m.
