FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 24 Nova Southeastern University women’s tennis team (5-1, 3-1 SSC) won a Sunshine State Conference match, 5-4, against No. 9 Rollins (2-3, 2-2 SSC) on Feb. 26 in Winter Park, Fla. With this win, the Sharks complete a weekend in which they won back-to-back matches on the road against top-10 nationally ranked teams.
Dominique Wimmer (Sr., Guntramsdorf, Austria) won a decisive tie-breaker in the No. 2 singles match to lift the Sharks past the Tars. She defeated Stefania Tkach (6-1; 7-6; 8, 6).
“The girls put in a great team effort, supporting each other along the way,” head coach
Michael Coleman said. “The rain slowed us down a little, but we didn’t lose momentum, coming out with the victory.”
Playing in the top spot,
Alexandra Johansson (Fr., Sydney, Australia) and
Austin Lavallii (Jr., Williamston, Mich.) recorded their first win as a doubles team against Lisa Loft/Kayli Ragsdale, 9-8. The duo of
Federica Longo (Jr., Buenos Aires, Argentina) and
Daria Burobina (So., Moscow, Russia) still remain undefeated in the No. 2 doubles. They cruised past Elissa DeCampli/Callie Whitlock by a score of 8-5.
Mariana Salvador and Ashley Rosenberg put the Rollins on the board first with an 8-5 win in the No. 3 doubles spot versus Wimmer and
Kamryn Blackwood (So., Farmington, N.M.).
Up one after doubles play, the Sharks obtained another win from No. 44 Johannson playing in the No. 1 singles. She defeated No. 26 Loft 6-4, 6-1. In the fifth spot, Longo secured a victory against Sara Stosljevic, defeating her, 6-2, 7-5.
Burobina fell to Rosenberg in the No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-3. In the No. 4 spot, Lavalli was no match for Salvador with a 6-2, 6-1 loss.
Charlotte Cote (Fr., Montreal, Canada) also fell, playing in the No. 6 spot. DeCampli beat her 6-3, 6-2.
With Cote’s loss to DeCampli, the score was tied 4-4. This set up Wimmer for a crucial win to lock in the victory over Rollins. She sealed the win with a (6-1; 7-6; 8, 6) defeat over Tkach.
The Sharks come home and rest for a week before taking the court and hosting NCAA Division I Georgetown on March 4 at 2 p.m. at the NSU Tennis Center.
