BOX SCORE
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –The Nova Southeastern baseball team (8-2) erased a five-run deficit and defeated the Barry Buccaneers (4-8), 10-8, Tuesday at the NSU Baseball Complex on a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning from
Areo Regoli (Sr., Homestead, Fla.).
Regoli hit his sixth home run of the season with two outs on the board and
Angel Navarro (Fr., Miami Lakes, Fla.) on first base. Regoli, who helped tied the game in the eighth inning, drove the ball down the left field line and over the fence on a 0-1 count. It was the Sharks’ first walk-off win of the season and first since their playoff win against Harding last May. Regoli finished the night 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Ray Navarro (Sr., Miami, Fla.) also had a big night, going 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored.
Sean Tighe (Sr., Hobe Sound, Fla.) (1-1) picked up his first win of the season by pitching a scoreless ninth inning.
Mike Gonzalez (Jr., Miami, Fla.) also continued his strong start to his NSU career, pitching 2.2 scoreless innings while only giving up three hits. He now holds a 1.84 ERA over 14.2 innings pitched.
The Sharks fell behind by three runs after the first two innings but tied the game in the bottom of the second. The rally was started by
Javi Sujo (Sr., Miami, Fla.), who picked up the Sharks first hit with a single up the middle.
Alex Marrero (Jr., Miami, Fla.) and Ray Navarro each followed up with singles, the latter of which drove in Sujo.
Brett Clements (Jr., Riverview, Fla.) had one of the biggest hits of his NSU tenure in the second, a double to centerfield that drove in two runs. It was Clements’ second extra base hit as a Shark.
The Bucs slowly built a large lead after the second inning, scoring in three of the next five innings to go up 8-3. It was the largest deficit the Sharks had faced all season. NSU cut into it in the third when the Sharks began an early-inning rally. Marrero, Ray Navarro and Clements were once again the Sharks to produce offensively. Marrero reached base on balls and scored off a double down the left field line. Ray Navarro would eventually score off a single through the right side by Clements.
The Sharks completed the comeback with a three-run eighth inning. Regoli got the momentum started with a single down the right field line.
Daniel Petitbon (Sr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) followed up with a walk and Sujo loaded the bases with a single through the right side.
Marrero put together another productive at bat as he drove home a run and advanced the tying run into scoring position. Ray Navarro went on to drive through a game-tying single up the middle. Ray Navarro recorded his third and fourth RBI of the game.
Tighe entered in the ninth inning and set the stage for the big finish by keeping the Bucs off the board. After two quick outs, Chris Morales drew a walk to put the winning run on base. Regoli, who did not have a hit until the eighth inning, closed the show with his game-ending home run to left field
The Sharks will return to the NSU Baseball Complex this Saturday when they take on St. Rose in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
