Nova Southeastern baseball head coach Greg Brown has postponed the Sharks' game against Barry due to inclement weather. The game has been rescheduled to Thursday, Feb. 9 at 6 p.m. at the NSU Baseball Complex.
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern baseball team (3-0) will face its toughest test of the early season, as the Sharks renew their rivalry with the Barry Buccaneers (2-1) Tuesday, Feb. 7 at the NSU Baseball Complex at 6 p.m.
The Sharks and the Bucs were the top two teams in the Sunshine State Conference last season, with the Bucs taking the conference title by three games. The two teams faced each other seven times last season, more than any other opponent for either team. The Bucs took the edge in the series, 4-3, but it did not come easy.
During the regular season, the Sharks took a 3-2 edge in the season series with three of the five games coming down to two runs or less. Barry won two of the three SSC games, one of which went to 13 innings, while the Sharks won two non-conference games on the road.
The Bucs took the season edge in the NCAA South Regional when they handed the Sharks’ two losses. Barry defeated the Sharks, 6-0, in the first game of the postseason and went on to eliminate the Sharks with a 5-4 victory. In the series defining game, the Sharks had a runner on third base in the bottom of the ninth inning, but could not send him home. Barry would go on to fall to the eventual NCAA National Champions West Florida.
Players that greatly impacted the series for both teams have graduated, but the Sharks do return student-athletes who’ve had success against the Bucs.
Sean Tighe (Sr., Hobe Sound, Fla.) made four appearances against Barry last year. In those games he pitched 16 innings, averaged 1.5 strikeouts per inning and held the Bucs to a .213 batting average.
Areo Regoli (Sr., Homestead, Fla.) appeared in six games against Barry last year, posting a .346 batting average and six RBI.
The Sharks will be coming off three wins against Albany State in which NSU outscored the Rams, 36-2. Barry did not have the same success this past weekend against Georgia Southwestern. The Bucs took two out of three games, both by one run, and lost one game, 7-0.
Tuesday’s contest will not count towards either team’s SSC record with the same being said for the teams’ meeting on Feb. 28. The Sharks and Bucs will play their conference series in Miami Shores from March 30-31.
