FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern women’s basketball team (12-8, 5-6 SSC) will head up Florida’s eastern coast Wednesday to take on the Panthers of Florida Tech (14-7, 5-6 SSC) in a Sunshine State Conference matchup. Tip-off in Melbourne is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at the Clemente Center.
The Sharks topped No. 18 Florida Southern over the weekend, 62-58, to pick up their second win over the ranked Mocs this season.
Jessica Russi (So., Lake Mary, Fla.) recorded her second double-double of the year, grabbing a career-high 12 boards and scoring 11 points in the Sharks’ victory.
Russi was joined in double figures by
Meixandra Porter (Jr., Chantilly, Va.) and Jasmine Wilkins (So., Miami, Fla.). Porter tallied a game-high 16 points, hitting three triples, while Wilkins scored 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting.
Florida Tech also knocked off the Mocs last week, capturing a 77-64 win Feb. 1 at home before upending Saint Leo on the road, 87-46, Feb. 4. Kayk Wilson, who is averaging only 6.1 points per game this season, dropped 19 on the Lions. Ashton McClairen, who leads the Panthers with 13.2 ppg, posted 12 points in the blowout victory.
Both squads have played to a 5-6 SSC mark with five conference contests remaining. The Sharks and Panthers sit in sixth place in the conference standing, one game back of Eckerd at 6-5 and two behind Lynn, who holds the fourth spot. NSU dropped both its meetings with Eckerd, but will travel to Boca Raton Feb. 22 to take on a Lynn team that it lost to by a single basket on Jan. 18. The fourth spot in the conference standings is important as the top-four teams will host a game in the first round of the conference tournament.
In the first meeting between Tech and NSU Jan. 4, the Sharks used a 14-1 run over the final 3:44 of the game to pick up its first SSC win this season. Porter, Wilkins,
Danielle Robinson (Fr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and
Jada Buckner (Sr., Loudon, Tenn.) each scored in double-figures against the Panthers.
