Baseball Drops 1-0 Pitchers Dual Against Barry

Sharks give up the game’s lone run in the ninth inning.

BOX SCORE

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –
The Nova Southeastern baseball team (3-1) took its first loss of the season Thursday night at the NSU Baseball Complex, as the Sharks lost to the defending Sunshine State Conference Champions, Barry, 1-0.

The contest developed into a pitcher’s duel as both teams had three hits apiece. Mike Gonzalez (Jr., Miami, Fla.) received the start in his second appearance as a Shark and proved his place among the Sharks’ top new arms. Gonzalez had a no-hitter through the first five innings before giving up one hit in the sixth. In a 76-pitch outing, Gonzalez struck out five batters and only allowed three base runners, two of which came in his sixth and final inning.

Mauricio Rodriguez (Sr., Miami, Fla.) entered the seventh inning in relief of Gonzalez and pitched well in his 2012 debut. Rodriguez threw two no-hit, shutout innings in which he struck out three batters. It was Rodriguez’s first appearance since earning the Sharks’ first NCAA postseason win last season against Stillman.

The Buccaneers won the game late as they drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth inning. Sean Tighe (Sr., Hobe Sound, Fla.) (0-1) made his first appearance of the season and picked up the loss.

Carlos Asuaje (So., Weston, Fla.), Blake Boyd (Jr., Jupiter, Fla.) and newcomer Chris Morales (Jr., Miami, Fla.) were the only Sharks to record hits in the game. The Sharks had little success on the base paths, with only two runners reaching scoring position. Neither runner would reach third base, as Boyd was caught stealing third in the sixth inning and pinch runner Angel Navarro (Fr., Miami Lakes, Fla.), who was making his NSU debut, was stranded on second base in the eighth.

This was another close game in the all-time series between NSU and Barry. Five of the last eight games have now been determined by two runs or less.

The Sharks will return to the NSU Baseball Complex Wednesday, Feb. 15 when they take on Florida Memorial at 6 p.m.
