No. 26 Tennis Wins SSC Match Against Eckerd, 8-1

Sharks sweep the Tritons in doubles action.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.
– The No. 26 Nova Southeastern tennis team (6-5, 4-1 SSC) upset the Eckerd Tritons (1-7, 0-5 SSC) Saturday, March 10, 8-1, after a strong showing in doubles play at the Turley Athletic Complex in St. Petersburg, Fla.

In doubles play, NSU cruised past Eckerd in all three matches, outscoring the Tritons, 24-7. Freshman Alexandra Johansson (Sydney, Australia) and Austin Lavallii (Jr., Williamston, Mich.) defeated Gipson Hawn/Erika Fridrik in the No. 1 spot, 8-3. The next two points came from Dominique Wimmer (Sr., Guntramsdorf, Austria)/Kamryn Blackwood (So., Farmington, N.M.), and Charlotte Cote (Fr., Montreal, Canada)/Bianca Roberts (Fr., Ft. Walden Beach, Fla.). Wimmer/Blackwood won, 8-3, while Cote/Roberts recorded an 8-1 victory.

In singles action, Johansson improved to 6-4, sweeping Stephanie Jenks with a score of 6-0, 6-0. Wimmer defeated Hawn in the No. 2 spot, 6-0, 6-2. 

The next three matches all were determined by a tiebreaker. Cote, playing in the No. 3 spot, lost her first set, but finished strong and defeated Carson Trapp, 4-6; 6-4; 10, 4. Roberts pulled off the upset and beat her opponent, 6-4; 3-6; 10, 7. Federica Longo (Jr., Buenos Aires, Argentina) played a close match but she could not pull off the win, eventually falling to Taylor Bullock 1-6; 6-4; 11, 9.

Blackwood, playing No. 6 singles, came out with a win against Fridrik, 6-2, 6-3.

The Sharks will come back home tomorrow, March 11, and host No. 11 California University of Pennsylvania at 11:00 a.m. at the NSU Tennis Center.
