FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 26 Nova Southeastern tennis team (6-6) fell to No. 11 Calif. Univ. of Pa. (5-1), 8-1, on Sunday afternoon at the NSU Tennis Center.
Daria Burobina (So., Moscow, Russia) and
Charlotte Cote (Fr., Montreal, Canada) helped the Sharks collect a point in doubles play. The duo recorded an 8-5 victory, playing in the No. 3 spot.
In the top spot of doubles action, No. 5 Martina Rubesova/Franziska Steinhardt beat
Alexandra Johansson (Fr., Sydney, Australia) and
Austin Lavallii (Jr., Williamston, Mich.), 8-5. Playing in the No. 2 spot,
Dominique Wimmer (Sr., Guntramsdorf, Austria) and
Kamryn Blackwood (So., Farmington, N.M.) fell to No. 12 Annabel Pieschl/Jade Pondicas, 8-2.
NSU fell into a hole after doubles and couldn't make a comeback, as the Vulcans swept the Sharks in singles action.
Johansson battled No. 10 Rubesova in No. 1 singles. Rubesova won the first set ,6-1, while Johansson took the second, 7-5. Johansson could not pull off the upset, eventually falling, 10-7, in the tie-breaker. Wimmer fell, 6-2, 6-2, to No. 30 Pieschl in the No. 2 spot. No. 31 Pondicas defeated Cote, 6-0, 6-0, playing in the No. 3 slot.
In the No. 4 spot,
Bianca Roberts (Fr., Ft. Walden Beach, Fla.) lost, 6-0, 6-4, to Anastassiya Zherdeva. Steinhardt had a 6-0, 6-3 win over
Federica Longo (Jr., Buenos Aires, Argentina) in the No. 5 spot. Blackwood lost, 6-2, 6-1, to Jesse Burrell in No. 6 singles.
NSU will be back on the court Saturday, March 17, hosting No. 8 West Florida at 1:00 p.m.
