GAME ONE BOX | GAME TWO BOX
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 8 Nova Southeastern baseball team (27-6) completed the season sweep of the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish (16-17) Saturday, winning both games of a doubleheader at the NSU Baseball Complex. The Sharks won the first game, 7-5, before taking the second game, 3-2.
GAME ONE
The Sharks took a two-run lead in the first inning and never looked back, working through seven PBA pitchers before taking the win, 7-5.
Areo Regoli (Sr., Homestead, Fla.) had a game-best two RBI and went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Carlos Asuaje (So., Weston, Fla.),
Chris Morales (Jr., Miami, Fla.) and
Alex Marrero (Jr., Miami, Fla.) also had multiple hits in the contest.
Cody Stiles (Jr., Coral Springs, Fla.) (5-1) earned his fifth win of the season, allowing one earned run and five hits over 6.2 innings pitched. He fanned five PBA batters and lowered his ERA to 2.56.
Mauricio Rodriguez (Sr., Miami, Fla.) earned his team-best third save in the game.
The Sharks took advantage of PBA’s mistakes early as Asuaje and Regoli each scored off wild pitches in the first inning. The Sharks went on the attack again in the fourth, driving in three runs for their biggest frame of the game.
Brett Clements (Jr., Riverview, Fla.) led off the side with a walk and Asuaje moved him into scoring position with a double to right field. Morales drove them both home on a single through the left side. After stealing second, Morales was plated on a single to centerfield by Regoli.
After PBA scored its first run in the sixth inning, the Sharks stretched their lead to 7-1 by tacking on two in the bottom of the frame. Marrero recorded the first RBI on a single through the left side, plating Regoli. Clements followed up with his only hit of the game, a RBI double down the left field line that drove home
Javi Sujo (Sr., Miami, Fla.).
PBA would battle back into the contest by scoring four more runs. Despite putting the tying run on base in the ninth inning, the Sharks were able to seal the deal on a swinging strikeout from Rodriguez.
GAME TWO
The Sharks sealed the sweep by squeaking out a tough 3-2 victory in a seven-inning contest to close out a 4-0 week for NSU.
Mike Gonzalez (Jr., Miami, Fla.) (3-0) made his third start of the season and earned the victory. Gonzalez held the Sailfish to five hits in six shutout innings. He allowed one walk and struck out two batters. His ERA now stands at 1.49 on the year.
Sean Tighe (Sr., Hobe Sound, Fla.) pitched the final inning and earned his second save of the season. Sujo led the offense with two RBI and a run scored on 2-for-3 hitting.
After three scoreless innings, the Sharks posted all three of their runs on the board in the fourth inning. Regoli led off the side with an infield single and was followed by a double down the left field line by Marrero. Sujo picked up both of his RBI on a single through the right side.
Sujo would make his way to third base, as
Michael Melendez (Fr., Miramar, Fla.) singled to right field and
Eric Acevedo (Jr., Miami, Fla.) drew a walk. With the bases loaded,
Ryan Woodrey (Fr., Lighthouse Point, Fla.) recorded a sacrifice fly to right field which sent Sujo home.
PBA nearly closed the scoring gap again as they scored two runs and loaded the bases with one out in the seventh inning. However, the Sharks abruptly ended the game by drawing a 563 double play to keep the tying run from scoring.
NSU now brings their winning streak to seven games. The Sharks are winners of 11 of their last 12 games.
The Sharks do not have a midweek game on their slate this week and will move on to a road series against Florida Southern, beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
