No. 18 NSU Tennis Ends Regular Season in Loss to Undefeated No. 2 Barry, 8-1

Johansson wins in the top singles flight.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 18 Nova Southeastern tennis team (8-13, 4-4 SSC) finished the regular season with a loss to the undefeated No. 2 Barry Buccaneers (19-0, 8-0 SSC), 8-1, Saturday at the NSU Tennis Complex.

The Sharks had their lone win come in the top singles flight, as Alexandra Johansson (Fr., Sydney, Australia) upset the 14th ranked player in the nation in Cristina Valladares. Johansson fell in a hole early, dropping the first set, 2-6, before bouncing back by taking two must-win sets, 6-4, 6-3.

The Sharks nearly took multiple wins in singles play, as two matches were decided in a final pro set. In the No. 2 slot, Dominique Wimmer (Sr., Guntramsdorf, Austria), who was honored during senior day, dropped the first set, 7-5, against Julie Stas. She then bounced back to win the second frame, 3-6. The match was decided in a pro set that the Bucs won, 10-7.

Charlotte Cote (Fr., Montreal, Canada) also lost in a three-set match against Sarah Krohnen. Cote took the advantage early by winning the first set in a tiebreaker, 6-7 (3-7). Krohnen bounced back to win the next two sets, 6-2, 10-3.

In the third singles flight, Bianca Roberts (Fr., Fort Walden Beach, Fla.) returned to the lineup and lost to Olivia Matuszak, 6-0, 6-3. In the fourth singles slot, Daria Burobina (So., Moscow, Russia) lost to Caroline Wendling, 6-2, 6-3. Wrapping up singles play was Austin Lavallii (Jr., Williamston, Mich.) in the sixth hole, losing to Akemi Maehama, 7-5, 6-1.

The Sharks were swept in doubles play, but nearly took the No. 3 doubles match with Burobina and Roberts. The duo faced Wendling and Linda Fritschken and lost in a match that came down to the wire, 8-6. In the top doubles flight Johansson and Lavallii fell to Barry’s top team in Valladares and Mona Mansour, 8-2. In the second doubles match, Wimmer and Cote lost to Stas and Matuszak, 8-3.

The Sharks will enter the Florida Blue Sunshine State Conference Championship this Thursday in Lakeland, Fla. The Sharks will enter the tournament as the fifth seed and will face fourth seed Rollins.
