BOX SCORE
LAKELAND, Fla. – The No. 7 Nova Southeastern baseball team (28-8, 9-5 SSC) earned its fifth road win in nine outings, defeating the Florida Southern Mocs (23-18, 11-10 SSC), 5-2, in Lakeland, Fla. Sunday.
Carlos Asuaje (So., Weston, Fla.) produced in the leadoff spot, scoring three of his team’s five runs. Asuaje went 2-for-4 on the day with a RBI.
Javi Sujo (Sr., Miami, Fla.) also had a strong outing, going 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Vinnie Contaldi (Jr., Jupiter, Fla.) (4-1) earned the victory in relief. Contaldi threw 3.2 shutout innings, allowing only two hits and a walk.
Cody Stiles (Jr., Coral Springs, Fla.) started the game, pitching the first four innings while striking out five batters.
The Sharks put themselves on the board first with a run in each of the first three innings. Asuaje led off the game with a double down the right field line. After Asuaje recorded his first of two stolen bases, Sujo earned his first RBI on a single through the left side. In the second,
Brett Clements (Jr., Riverview, Fla.) led off with a single up the middle and advanced to third on two straight sacrifice bunts. Asuaje would record the third-straight sacrifice, driving home Clements on a fly ball to centerfield.
The Sharks would record another leadoff double in the third inning, when
Areo Regoli (Sr., Homestead, Fla.) doubled to centerfield. Sujo recorded his second RBI with a double to right field on a 0-1 count. While the Sharks built their early lead, the Mocs put forth offense of their own. However, the Sharks kept the home team from crossing home plate and stranded eight Mocs on base in the first three innings.
The Mocs finally broke through with two runs in the fourth inning, cutting the Sharks’ lead to one run. The Sharks were able to strand the tying run at third base. NSU scored its fourth run in the seventh inning, as Asuaje scored despite striking out to start the frame. Asuaje converted on a rare wild pitch to reach first base before stealing his team-best 13th base of the season. After
Chris Morales (Jr., Miami, Fla.) grounded out to advance the runner, Regoli plated Asuaje on a single through the right side.
The Sharks put an insurance run on the board in the ninth inning, bringing their lead back to three runs. The Sharks scored on back-to-back hits, as Asuaje hit a one-out double to left centerfield before scoring on Morales’ single through the right side.
Sean Tighe (Sr., Hobe Sound, Fla.) closed the game and tied the team-high with his third save. He held the Mocs to one hit over five batters faced.
The Sharks will return to the NSU Baseball Complex this Tuesday when they face Florida Tech in a nonconference game at 6 p.m.
