FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern men’s soccer team (3-2-0) will end its six-match homestand Wednesday, as the Sharks take on the undefeated Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish (6-0-0) at the NSU Soccer Complex at 6 p.m.
The Sharks are coming off two straight losses in matches that left a sour taste in their mouths. In the first loss against Florida Southern, the Sharks set a three year-best mark (in a 90-minute match) of 24 shots and a five year-best mark of 12 corner kicks. However, the Sharks were not able to find the back of the net and Florida Southern sealed the win by scoring on one of their two shots-on-goal.
In the Sharks’ Sunshine State Conference debut against Florida Tech, the Sharks once again outshot their opposition and led the match by a goal on three separate occasions. Unfortunately, the Panthers scored on two corner kicks and sent the match into overtime by taking advantage of a NSU defensive mistake. Florida Tech sealed the Sharks’ fate in the second overtime period.
NSU will attempt to shift their momentum against the Sailfish Wednesday. A win would give the Sharks a respectable 4-2 record over their opening-season homestand. A loss would put the Sharks at 3-3, which would be a disappointment considering the team’s 3-0 start.
Palm Beach Atlantic may give the Sharks’ their toughest fight thus far. The Sailfish enter the week undefeated, with wins against teams such as Ave Maria (4-0), Anderson (4-0) and Colorado Christian (5-0). The Sailfish currently hold a +18 goal differential.
Despite the Saiflish’s solid numbers so far, history will be on the Sharks’ side. NSU holds a 19-8 record over Palm Beach Atlantic. A win would tie the program-best mark for wins against a single opponent.
