Swimming and Diving Falls To Florida Southern

Six seniors were recognized on Senior Day

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla
. – On Saturday, prior to their final home meet, the Nova Southeastern swimming and diving teams honored six seniors: Erin Black (Sr., Fort Myers, Fla.), Kimba Collymore (Sr., Port Orange, Fla.), Marie Hanft (Sr., Port Orange, Fla.), Devan Martin (Sr., Johns Creek, Ga.), Kelsea Smith (Sr., Edina, Minn.) and Oskar Nordstrand (Sr., Stockholm, Sweden).

The Sharks fell against Florida Southern, with the No. 15 men (3-4) losing to the No. 4 Moccasins 160-45, while the No. 18 women (3-5) lost 106-99.

Kicking off the day for the Sharks was the women’s 200-yard medley relay. The women’s “A” team finished second behind Florida Southern with a time of 1:51.03. The men “A” followed behind the women and claimed a third-place finish with a time of 1:35.75.

In the women’s 1,000-yard freestyle, Black took second place to Florida Southern’s Alli Crenshaw and swam to a time of 10:37.01. This is the first time Black has lost to an SSC opponent in this event. On the men’s side, Nordstrand claimed a third-place finish with a time of 9:40.58.

In the following event, the women’s 200-yard freestyle, Kristen Ann Zielinski (Fr., Chesapeake, Va.) captured the first victory of the day with a B-cut qualifying time of 1:53.93. Florian Mehlan (Jr., Moors, Germany) claimed the top spot for the Sharks in this event with a time of 1:44.62.His time landed him in fourth place.

In the women’s 50- yard freestyle, Collymore swam to a second-place finish with a time of 24.71. The men followed next in the event, where Esau Simpson (Jr., St. David’s, Grenada) captured third place with a time of 21.51.

Lauren Chapple (So., London, England) claimed the women’s second victory of the day in the 400-individual medley with a time of 4:34.06. Oscar Aldabe (Jr., Alicante, Spain) swam to a third-place finish in the same event in a time of 4:11.88.

In the next event, Emma Lawrenz (So., Minnetonka, Minn.) took a second-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:15.52. Teammate Miranda Schumes (Fr., Bloomington, Ind.) followed directly behind Lawrenz and finished to the wall in a time of 2:15.71. On the men’s side, Santiago Pombo (So., Bogota, Columbia) was the top Shark in the event with a time of 1:57.81. His time was good for third place.

In the women’s 100-yard freestyle, Collymore struck back again and collected another second-place finish with a time of 53.88. Simpson swam to a fourth-place finish with a time of 47.67.

Chapple led the Sharks in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:09.92. Her time was good for second place. Josh Davis (Jr., Huron, S.D) finished to the wall in fourth place with a time of 1:57.42.

In the 500-yard freestyle, Black was victorious with a B-cut time of 5:07.59. Nordstrand took third in the event with a time of 4:45.09.

In one of the closest races of the day, Ashley Bransford (Jr., Santa Cruz, Aruba) was touched out for first place in the 200-yard breaststroke by Florida Southern’s Morgan Burns. She finished second in a time of 2:26.29. Aldabe finished in similar fashion on the men's side, touching into the wall for second-place with time of 2:12.46.

To finish out the meet was the 200-yard freestyle relay. The women’s “A’ team took first-place with a time of 1:38.39. The men’s “A” team finished third with a time of 1:28.71.

This meet concludes the Sharks regular season. NSU will be back in action on Feb. 13-16 at the Sunshine State Conference Championships in Clearwater, Fla. The men and women will look to defend their titles from last season.
