Sharks Taken Down By Grand Valley State

Black and Mehlan both hit NCAA B qualifying standards.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.
– The Nova Southeastern swimming and diving teams returned to action Wednesday afternoon at the NSU Aquatic Center, as both the men’s and women’s teams took their second duals losses against Division-II opponents. The No. 13 men’s team  lost to No. 12 Grand Valley State, 137-61, while the No. 15 women’s team lost to the No. 12 Lakers, 109-96.

The day started with the 400-yard medley relay, as The Lakers took victories in both the men’s and women’s event. The Sharks’ A-women’s team finished in second with a time of 4:52.43. The men’s A-team claimed third place, finishing with a time of 3:37.57.

The women took their first victory of the day when Erin Black (Sr., Fort Myers, Fla.)  won the 100-yard freestyle with a NCAA B-cut time of 10:14.75. Oskar Nordstrand (Sr., Stockholm, Sweden) was the top finisher in the event, claiming second place with a time of 9:52.96.

In the 200-yard freestyle, the Sharks took another victory, as Kristen Ann Zielinski (Fr., Cheasapeake, Va.) was first to the wall with a time of 1:56.17. Florian Mehlan  (Jr., Moers, Germany) followed Zielinkski’s lead by touching the wall with a NCAA B qualifying time of 1:43.09. 

In the women’s 50-yard freestyle,Linea Cutter (So., Coral Springs, Fla.) swam to a second-place finish with a time of 25.27. In the men’s event, Esau Simpson (Jr., St. Davids, Grenada) placed the highest for the Sharks in the event, capturing a third-place finish with a time of 21.67.

In the 200-yard IM, Ashley Bransford (Jr., Santa Cruz, Aruba) finished third, coming into the wall with a time of 2:17.81. In the men’s event, Oscar Aldabe (Jr., Alicante, Spain) claimed fourth place with a team-best time of 1:59.36.

After the first break in action, the swimmers returned for the 100-yard butterfly. On the women’s side, Kimba Collymore (Sr., St. James, Trinidad) claimed second place with a time of 1:00.11. In the men’s event, Darren Rubenchik (Jr., Ontario, Canada) took home fourth place with a time of 53.52.

The Sharks took home second place in both the men’s and women’s 100-yard freestyle. Zielinkski clocked in at 54.36 while Simpson finished in 47.59 seconds.

In the 100-yard backstroke, Lauren Chapple (So., London, England) claimed second place with a time of 1:02.99. In the men’s version, Josh Davis (Jr., Huron, S.D.) came in third place with a team-best time of 54.18.

Black would take her second win of the day in the women’s 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:11.85. In the men’s event, Nordstrand was the top finisher for the Sharks with a time of 4:45.93, good for third place.

After a second break, the 100-yard breaststroke began, as Collymore pulled out an impressive victory, touching out Grand Valley State’s Danielle Vallier with a time of 1:07.32. On the men’s side,Cameron Pfahler (Jr., Neptune Beach, Fla.) swam to a third-place finish with a time of 1:01.41.

The final event of the day came in the 400-yard freestyle relay, in which the Lakers swept. NSU’s A-team finished in second with a time of 3:44.82, while the men  finished in third with a time of 3:18.97. The men’s team was just over a tenth of a second behind the Lakers’ A-team.

The Sharks will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 12 on the road against Florida Atlantic and Western Kentucky.
