Swimming Tops Florida Tech Home Opener

Three NCAA provisional qualifying times set at first NSU home meet.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –
In support of Breast Cancer Awareness, the Nova Southeastern University men's and women's swim teams sported their pink caps and pink towels and pulled out a win against the Florida Tech Panthers on Friday afternoon at the NSU Aquatic Complex. It was the first-ever regular season meeting between the two teams in which the Sharks women pulled out a 140-65 win, while the men secured a 127.50-81.50 victory.
 
Not one, but three NCAA provisional qualifying times were also set at the pool on Friday afternoon. The first was set by NSU's Florian Mehlan (Sr., Moers, Germany) who won the men's 1,000-yard freestyle. Moers swam a time of 9:17.30 to provisionally qualify for NCAA postseason. The other two were secured in the 50-yard freestyle with one going to each team. Florida Tech's Nir Barnea (Fr., Omer, Israel) swam the top time of 20.92 seconds, while NSU's Esau Simpson (Sr., St. David's, Grenada) was .07 seconds back with a provisional qualifying time of 20.99.
                           
Friday's Breast Cancer Awareness event started with a pair of wins for the Sharks in the 400-yard medley relay. The women's quartet of Emma Wahlstrom (Fr., Stockholm, Sweden), Sammy Akoubian (Sr., Run Dacula, Ga.), Emma Lawrenz (Jr., Minnetonka, Minn.) and Arianna Sunyak (Jr., Naples, Fla.) swam a top time of 4:06.12. Marco Aldabe (Fr., Alicante, Spain), Oscar Aldabe (Sr., Alicante, Spain), Magnus Lundgren (Jr., Stockholm, Sweden) and Shane Kleinbeck(Jr., San Antonio, Texas) came in at 3:31.04 to secure the men's top time.
 
Later in the first session, Brooke Munion (Fr., Bethlehem, Pa.) and Kathleen Bowman (So., Iowa City, Iowa) secured the top two spots in the women's 200-yard freestyle. Munion swam a time of 1:57.08 to win the event, while Bowman came in second at 1:59.64. For the men, Kleinbeck won his first event of the season securing a time a 1:42.73, which is less than a second off provisionally qualifying for NCAA postseason.
 
In the women's 50-yard freestyle, Lawrenz won with a time of 24.98 for her first event win of the year. Both Marco Aldabe and Oscar Aldabe rounded out the first session finishing first and second respectively in the men's 400-yard individual medley. Marco swam the top time at 4:08.25, while Oscar finished with a time of 4:12.90.
 
After finishing second in the women's 200-yard freestyle, Bowman came back in the second session and won the women's 200-yard butterfly event with a time of 2:14.36. Simpson and Kleinbeck later claimed the top two spots in the men's 100-yard freestyle with Simpson finishing less than half a second from provisionally qualifying for postseason with a time of 46.67, while Kleinbeck finished second with a time of 47.15.
 
Wahlstrom and Kelsey Muma (Fr., Grand Rapids, Mich.) followed with their one…two tandem finish in the women's 200-yard backstroke. Wahlstrom finished at 2:09.09, while Muma finished at 2:14.28. Marco Aldabe also won the men's 200-yard backstroke for the Sharks with a time of 1:53.01.
 
The second session of events ended with the Sharks securing the top three spots on the women's side and the top four on the men's in the 500-yard freestyle. Munion swam the fastest time at 5:13.03, while Jessica Rocheleau (Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.) finished second at 5:16.29 and Sara Akoubian (Sr., Run Dacula, Ga.) finished third with a time of 5:21.17. Oscar Adalbe took top honors on the men's side with a winning time of 4:46.45, followed by Addison Cates' (Jr., Port Charlotte, Fla.) second-place time of 4:49.79. Cameron Chambers (Sr., St. Petersburg, Fla.) finished third at 4:49.90, while Andrew Pittman (Fr., Plano, Texas) swam an exhibition time of 4:50.50.
 
After another brief intermission, Ashley Bransford (Sr., Santa Cruz, Aruba) won the women's 200-yard breaststroke event with a winning time of 2:25.18, while Samantha Akoubian finished second at 2:34.30. The day ended with another pair of Shark wins in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The women's A-relay team won with a time of 3:39.59, while the men's A-relay quartet finished at 3:11.82.
 
The Sharks will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 1 p.m. when they travel to St. Leo, Fla. to take on the SLU Lions in their second SSC matchup in two days.
